Bio

Angelica is a graduate from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, where she achieved a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. During her undergraduate years, Angelica was also on a pre-medical track and ended up combining her engineering and medical skills to work for an engineering consulting firm that designs and constructs building systems for hospitals. She has always enjoyed interdisciplinary projects and viewing things holistically, believing that every aspect of the world is interconnected and that is what makes the world go round. She is interested in applying a multifaceted approach to solving some of the world’s global issues: providing clean renewable energy, fostering gender equity and diversity, building sustainable cities and communities, promoting responsible consumerism and mass production, and leading businesses to emphasize on corporate social responsibility. She hopes to enhance her engineering and leadership skills via the MScSM program, adding economic and social science knowledge to her sustainability lens.

From her current work in designing and implementing energy-efficient power distribution and lighting systems for buildings, her internship at an electrical utility provider, and volunteer work with a non-profit working on solar installation and design projects in developing areas, such as Puerto Rico and Sierra Leone, Angelica has enhanced her technical skills in engineering and also developed proficient abilities in consultancy, complex problem solving, creative and adaptable thinking, collaborating with people from all different backgrounds and expertise, and project management. As a woman of color in a STEM industry, Angelica found a home within the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). During university, she honed her leadership skills as the Vice President of Community Outreach of her collegiate section, overseeing all outreach programs and events the 500+ members club developed and implemented. Post-undergraduate, she continued her work on gender equity and diversity by becoming involved with the leadership team at her professional SWE section and creating and leading the women’s support committee at her work. Angelica also has an aptitude for providing guidance, which she discovered as a supplemental instruction session leader at Cal Poly and through mentoring interns and younger engineers at her work.

Outside of her academic and professional life, Angelica is an inquisitive and curious person who loves experiencing and learning new things. She enjoys traveling the word and immersing into different cultures, watching documentaries, listening to podcasts, trying new plant-based foods, and visiting museums. To stay active, she likes hiking, running, boxing, tennis, kayaking, and hitting the golf range. To explore her creative side, she practices piano, violin, and ukulele, and designing websites and creative resumes for her friends and family. A fun hobby she picked up in the last couple of years is scuba diving – this gives her an opportunity to explore the underwater and learn facts on how climate change affects the ocean and the wonderful critters it inhabits.
