Nicolas Vargas Gonzalez

Nicolas Vargas Gonzalez approaches sustainability as a systems challenge, looking at how environmental, social, and economic pieces interact and shape our world together. He studied environmental management at York University, with interests ranging from soil and fungi and regenerative landscapes to environmental assessment and came to the field from a mix of backgrounds: environmental studies, four years in trust and safety, and research coordination work in Chile, with a translation background.

Nicolas made the most of York's experiential learning, completing the hattrick of hands-on experiences: a field course in Las Nubes Campus, Costa Rica exploring biological corridors, agroforestry, and energy governance; a work-study position at Maloca Living Lab using ArcGIS Pro and Storymaps to map edible plant species across York U campuses; and a capstone project through the Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom (C4) that won the Honda Canada Foundation Sustainability Award, working with Northcrest Developments on YZD shared ownership and co-creation. What ties these together is his interest in how research and ideas translate into real, workable solutions.

Nicolas is bilingual in English and Spanish, with a growing interest in French. Outside of school, he enjoys playing music with friends across some of Toronto's emblematic venues, building computers from scratch, and playing old-school online games. Rain or shine, he's a lifelong Chelsea F.C. supporter.
