Alena Blanes

Bachelor of Applied Arts (Hons.), Media Studies & Public Relations • University of Guelph

Diploma in Media Communications • Humber College

Alena’s fascination with the natural world began at a young age. After infamously founding her elementary school’s first recycling program she later sparked interest in bridging communication and science to create equitable societies.

While completing her (Hons) Bachelor of Applied Arts in Media Studies and Public Relations at the University of Guelph-Humber, Alena quickly noticed a gap between climate change data and public awareness. She explored this in her thesis, ‘Approaching Climate Change Through the Lens of Millennial and Gen Z Social Media Users,’ which analyzed how social movements enact policy changes.

While studying, Alena worked as Managing Editor for IGNITE Student Life, where she wrote on lifestyle, finance, and sustainability topics. In addition, she served as Event Sustainability Coordinator for EMERGE Toronto, winning three prestigious international awards for her team. Alena also volunteered with the Canadian Public Relations Society and Humber College’s Office of Sustainability, supporting the institution’s five-year sustainability plan.

After graduating, Alena carved a unique path for herself, working in recruitment and public relations in Toronto before accepting a role with the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

A West Coast native, Alena has picked up a lengthy repertoire of outdoor hobbies. She enjoys backpacking, ethical travel, minimalism, yoga, skiing and improving her climbing skills. When not pursuing adventure, Alena volunteers as Creative Design Manager at Shake Up The Establishment, a Canadian youth-led non-profit promoting climate justice and political action. In July 2021, she was awarded the organization’s ‘Most Dedicated Award’ for contributing over 100 volunteer hours.

After completing the MScSM program, she will continue using PR as a force for good to address climate justice and leadership issues across Canada and the world.
