Samer graduated from the Central University of Venezuela with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. A few months later he traveled to Spain to pursue a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies with a specialization in political science. During this time, he researched on the advantages and disadvantages of parliamentary and presidential systems and the role of parliament in holding presidencies to account.

Samer worked with the Venezuelan chapter of Transparency International as Projects Assistant, managing a project funded by the European Union to oversee Venezuela’s implementation of the International Convention Against Corruption. In 2011, he joined RockCorps as Manager of NGO partnerships and developed alliances with over 20 NGOs to conduct 27 projects for the recovery of public spaces and schools in depressed areas of Caracas.

In 2012 he joined the British Embassy in Venezuela, first as Project Manager and Human Rights Specialist and then as Sustainable Development Officer. During this time, Samer followed and reported on Human Rights and political issues, managed the Embassy’s bilateral cooperation funds, and served as liaison with the Venezuelan authorities on climate change. Working at the British Embassy allowed him to work on strategic communication and engagement plans and to gain policy analysis experience.

During the 2016 summer, he moved to Sault Ste. Marie to work with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on climate change policy development and analysis. After graduation from the MScSM program, Samer would like to develop a career in public affairs, political risk analysis, and climate change and energy policy.
