Nathan was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. He moved to Toronto to complete his Honours Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Toronto (St. George). His degree included a double major in Biology and Environment & Science, as well as a minor in Environment & Energy.

During his first two undergraduate summers, Nathan performed biomedical research in a platelet immunology lab McMaster University. This taught him thorough lab skills that he would apply in the future. Throughout his biology courses, Nathan grew most interested in botany, so he decided to put his lab skills to work by performing botanical research in the T.L. Sage Lab at the University of Toronto. Here he characterized morphological differences between C3 and C4 photosynthesis, whose differences are an important aspect of agriculture in a changing climate. Finally Nathan tested his non-lab research skills by performing a background and foundational research project for the application of passive energy for the City of Toronto at Metro Hall in the Environmental Planning Office.

In his first two years of university, Nathan was actively involved in the residence community and served as his floor’s creative director, and vice president. Additionally, he participated in the residence’s environmental group that worked towards making the building operations more sustainable. The following year he became the social director of the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Student Union.

Nathan’s personal interests include long distance road cycling, photography, board games, gardening, and enjoying good music.
