Callysta Silalahi is a process engineer pursuing a Master of Science in Sustainability Management at the University of Toronto. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering from the University of Indonesia, where she graduated Cum Laude. Her undergraduate research examined surfactant optimization in copper filtration, linking improved separation performance with lower downstream energy demand and operating requirements; she later presented the work at the 18th International Conference on Quality in Research. Her academic and technical background has shaped a strong interest in responsible mining, critical minerals, industrial decarbonization, circular economy, and the role of technology in making resource-intensive industries more efficient and sustainable.
Before joining the MScSM program, Callysta built more than four years of professional experience across mining, mineral processing, commissioning, production analysis, and applied research. At Amman Mineral, she worked as a Process Engineer supporting the commissioning and ramp-up of a major copper smelting facility. Her responsibilities analyzed production and energy data, assessed process constraints and cost drivers, supported root-cause reviews, and contributed to environmental compliance for sulphur dioxide and particulate emissions. Professional training in Wuhan, China further strengthened her ability to work in international and multicultural industrial environments.
Earlier roles with Freeport and Metso Outotec broadened Callysta's experience in circular-economy approaches to mineral-processing technology. She also worked in failure management, using root-cause analysis to investigate component. Beyond engineering, Callysta served as a university teaching and laboratory assistant, helping guide students through technical laboratories and strengthening her communication, organization, and mentoring skills.
Through the MScSM program, Callysta aims to connect engineering depth with sustainability strategy, organizational leadership, financial thinking, and stakeholder decision-making. She is especially interested in helping mining and heavy-industry organizations create value while reducing energy use, emissions, waste, and long-term environmental risk. Outside of work and academics, she enjoys nature hikes and scenic trails, travelling and experiencing new cultures, discovering local cuisines and coffee spots, staying active, and following emerging technologies and sustainability innovations.
