Bio

Sophia Martineau brings a strong foundation in science and technical operations to their work in sustainability, shaped by their early career in the U.S. Navy and later roles across biotech and research environments. Their experience spans biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and laboratory operations, with a focus on integrating sustainable practices into complex technical systems.

In their most recent role as Head of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and Facilities Operations at Astellas Gene Therapies, Sophia led initiatives to embed sustainability into day-to-day research functions. Their work included piloting My Green Lab certification across multiple labs, expanding waste diversion and recycling programs, and transitioning the site to a cleaner energy provider. They are especially passionate about applying practical, data-driven strategies to reduce environmental impact in science-based industries.

Sophia’s interest in sustainability grew from working directly with researchers, vendors, and leadership teams to implement real-world improvements, turning policy into practice. They are motivated by the opportunity to make environmental responsibility actionable, measurable, and scalable within the life sciences sector.

Outside of work, Sophia enjoys hiking with their spouse and two sons, taking road trips, and visiting science museums and public libraries along the way. They also enjoy solving logic puzzles and Rubik’s Cubes, tackling DIY home projects, and reading speculative fiction.
