Outbound Exchange
The UTM Exchange program offers students the incredible opportunity to study at over 140 partner institutions in more than 60 countries. Choose to study abroad for one semester, a full academic year, or even up to three semesters, all while paying your regular U of T tuition.
This program allows you to immerse yourself in new cultures, gain international experience, and earn credits towards your degree.
Step 1: Plan your application
- Check out the deadlines for exchange.
- Check eligibility & CGPA requirements.
- Explore funding options.
- Learn how to transfer credits to your UTM transcript.
- Write or update your resume.
- Have fewer than 4.0 credits? Complete the Interim Grade Report.

Step 2: Choose your schools
- Choose two schools - you'll list both choices on your application.
- Search through our 120+ exchange destinations using the Learning Abroad search tool.
- Compile a list of proposed courses for both schools (note: this list may change once your application is accepted).
- See which schools your academic department has recommended here.

Step 3: Apply!
- Fill out an application on the U of T Learning Abroad website.
- Get in touch with the IEC team for help, questions and advice.
- 2026-2027 Exchange application will open in the fall of 2025.
Terms - Use the academic calendar from the university you are applying to in order to determine these dates.
Course List - This list is only meant to give an idea of the types of courses you would like to take. Think of it as a 'wish list'. You will be given an opportunity to formally choose your actual courses once you are nominated.
Resume - The UTM Career Centre can help, please check out their resume tips & example resumes. If you have never written a Canadian style resume before, don't worry! A good place to start is by following this example. Once you've done the best you can alone, please book an appointment for an online resume critique, where a member of the Career Centre will go over your resume with you to help make it the best it can be.
Interim Grade Report - Are you a first-year students who has grades for less than 4.0 credits and are enrolled in Y-credit courses? Are you a student factoring in-progress Y-courses into their CGPA to meet requirements? If so, you need to complete an Interim Grade Report. Bring the completed and signed copy to the IEC before the application deadline.

UTM Abroad
UTM Abroad offers two streams of short-term international experiences that will build your global awareness, connect you to a network of like-minded peers and give you a space to develop personally, professionally & academically. In-person and virtual options are available for both streams.
Travel. Experience. Learn.
Why UTM Abroad?
- Short-term experiences fit within your study breaks, so you can continue to take your regular UTM courses uninterrupted.
- One international component fee covers flights, transportation, accommodation, meals and in-country activities.
- Travel with a UTM Staff member with crisis response and first aid training.
- 24hr on-call support in Canada from the International Education Centre's on-call representative.
- One-on-one advising pre- and post-trip.
UTM Abroad Academic Experiences
Take your learning to a new level by exploring the theme of your course in an international environment.
For in-person opportunities, travel to a location pertinent to your studies and deepen your learning through first-hand experience. For virtual opportunities, connect with partners worldwide for engaging discussions and activities to connect your learning to lived experiences.

Eligibility
- Students must be in good academic standing (minimum 1.5 CGPA) to participate in any of the experiences.
- Academic Experiences: Students must be enrolled in the corresponding course to participate in the international component.
- Co-curricular Experiences: Open to all UTM students in good academic standing regardless of program or year of study.
Costs
- Included in the Cost the International Component: Flights, transportation, accommodation, meals, in-country activities associated with the course, and trip-cancellation insurance. Check out our Funding Section.
- NOT Included in the Cost the International Component: Course fees, fees associated with travel insurance, trip cancellation insurance, additional optional tours/activities while abroad, visa applications, medical exams, vaccinations, and any other additional costs.
- The cost of these trips is posted pending approval based on the University's Policy on Ancillary Fees. Updates will be posted as needed.

We are striving to make UTM Abroad experiences as financially accessible as possible. Please see the bursary options below, if you are concerned about budgeting for a UTM Abroad experience, you can email utmabroad@utoronto.ca to set up an appointment with a coordinator to discuss your options.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Participants who have received bursaries assume responsibility for those funds upon cancellation of participation.
UTM Abroad Bursaries
- Bursaries will be awarded based on the participant's demonstrated level of financial need (not tied to OSAP) as shown in the financial need section of the UTM Abroad application.
- While we make every effort to support participation of as many students as possible, funding is limited so please ensure that your funding application is accurate and requests are submitted only as needed;
- Bursary amounts vary depending on financial need;
- Bursary awards will be reviewed by the UTM Abroad bursary committee and will be communicated to participants prior to the second installment deadline;
- The UTM Abroad Funding Application must be submitted at the time of application and must be submitted by the application deadline;
- For the UTM Abroad Academic Experiences, you must be a UTM undergraduate enrolled in the corresponding UTM course at the time of travel to be eligible for this bursary.

As you make your way through the application, you will be prompted to fill out various fields as part of the funding application.
