The Course:
SOC485H5 – Investigation Through Study Abroad
An in-depth examination of selected topics in sociology as part of a UTM Study Abroad experience. During the international experience, students will collect data and observations to use as the basis for a final analytical project. As part of this course, students will have the option of participating in an international learning experience that will have an additional cost and application process. An interview may be required, with priority given to Sociology and Criminology, Law and Society Specialists and Majors.

Trip - Cambodia Winter Reading Week
Approximate Travel Dates: Friday, February 16, 2024 - Sunday, February 25, 2024
Indulge in the history and culture of Cambodia as you travel the country to monumental sites like Phnom Penh, Banteay Chhmar and Siem Reap. Grow your understanding of memory, trauma, and peace as you explore and participate in various walking tours and homestays as well as visit famous historical sites like Angkor Wat. Together with Professor Phil Goodman and your classmates, you will have in-depth interviews with community leaders at local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that work on projects related to the Cambodian genocide.

Begin your trip in the second-largest city in Cambodia, Siem Reap, where you will visit the largest religious monument in the entire world, Angkor Wat. Ending the night with the Cambodian circus, Phare Circus, you will immerse yourself in the circus-style entertainment featuring high-flying acrobatics.
From Siem Reap, you will head to the countryside and stay in the village of Banteay Chhmar, where you will learn about community-based tourism and various perspectives will be unveiled from an area where the Khmer Rouge had maintained a strong presence in the past. Additionally, you will visit and explore ancient temples, visit the Pol Pot Baray and meet Hala Trust, an NGO dedicated to clearing landmines.
Spend the last few days in the bustling capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, where you will get the chance to visit S-21 Tuol Sleng, a museum chronicling the Cambodian genocide. You will also visit the Killing Fields and the Kdei Karuna, a politically neutral peacebuilding NGO aiming to contribute to a sustainable peace effort in Cambodia.

Estimated cost of International Component: $3,600.00 - $4,100.00
What is Included: Flights, transportation, accommodation, meals, in-country activities associated with the course, and trip-cancellation insurance. Funding Available!
What is NOT Included: Course fees, fees associated with supplemental travel insurance, additional optional tours/activities while abroad, visa applications, medical exams, vaccinations, and any other additional costs.

Applicants must submit an application for admission into the course to their respective departments and will be required to abide by the corresponding UTM Abroad application requirements and deadlines to participate in the international experience.

Fees must be paid in full by the required deadlines.

To prepare for the trip, students attending will participate in the mandatory pre-departure and safety abroad sessions.
