The Course: FAH287 - European Art of the Nineteenth Century
Surveys major developments in European art and architecture from the late eighteenth through the end of the nineteenth century, including Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Orientalism, Realism, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Symbolism. Artistic responses to political change, urbanization, capitalism, colonialism, the Academy, and the Salon will be explored as well as changing constructions of gender, race, class, and national identities through visual media.

The Trip: London and Paris Winter Reading Week
Approximate Travel Dates: Winter reading week from Friday, February 13 - Sunday, February 22, 2026 (Plus or minus two days before and after - exact dates and times will be communicated to you at the pre-departure session).

- Over the course of 10 days you will travel, learn about the development of European art, and share your passion with your classmates and Professor Alison Syme.

Get ready to join your faculty, and fellow travelling students, for unforgettable London-Paris adventure! Picture starting your journey with a direct evening flight to London, settling into the lively Holborn area, and easing into the trip with a walk to the National Gallery. Spend your days exploring world-class highlights like Tate Britain, the Wallace Collection, the V&A, and a stroll by the Palace of Westminster. Enjoy some free time to discover your own London favorites before boarding the evening train to Paris.
In Paris, dive into the Louvre, soak in the beauty of the Orangerie and Orsay, and enjoy a classic treat at Ladurée. Explore the Rodin Museum and choose your own adventure-maybe the Catacombs, the Sewers Museum, or the Panthéon. And one of your evenings will include a performance of Carmen at the stunning Paris Opera. With some free evenings, you’ll also have some room make the experience your own.

Payments
Estimated cost of International Component: CAD $4300-4600. (Final Installments will be determined based on the final trip cost).
What is Included: Flights, transportation, accommodation, meals, in-country activities associated with the course, and trip-cancellation insurance. Funding Available!
What is NOT Included: Course fees, fees associated with supplemental travel insurance, additional optional tours/activities while abroad, visa applications, medical exams, vaccinations, on-the-ground medical expenses, and any other additional costs.
Funding
Bursaries will be awarded based on demonstrated financial need (not linked to OSAP) as shown in your funding request in your UTM Abroad application. Read more about funding here!
If you have applied for a bursary, you will hear back about your bursary application at the same time as your trip application. Once you hear back, you will have about one week to decide whether to participate in the trip based on the bursary awarded. Please review the bursary policies here, and cancellation policies here.
