
Each year, UTM recognizes and celebrates the achievements and success of its student-athletes, coaches and student leaders across campus that have positively contributed to the success of the Department of Recreation, Athletics & Wellness. There have been many great student-leaders taking part in our department which you will be able to find the previous award winners from past years.

Tri-Campus Athlete of the Year Award Emily Sevcik | Emily has led her team in back-to-back championships, confidently scoring crucial goals in the finals. She has been a consistently dedicated member of the Women’s Soccer team for the past five years; She has thoughtfully shared the experience and insights they gained throughout their tenure to continuously improve their team. Tri-Campus Athlete of the Year Award Amro Matti | Amro is a force on the court that can be trusted in important and critical points of the game. He was thrust into a leadership position this season and answered the call with determination and perseverance. Throughout many games this season, he was able to be a difference maker that led to key team victories with the opposition defense at a loss on how to shut them down. He was a key contributor and one of the main reasons the team was victorious at our OCR Basketball Tournament. |

Cynthia E. Haddow Memorial Award Gracie Cunday | Gracie has been recognized for her versatility and growth on the ice. She may be one of the quieter players but the skill and talent they display speaks volumes. Gracie has a strong work ethic and their efforts are evident by how seamlessly she has fit into a new role within the team. |
UTM Fair Play Award Laura Neira | Laura has been a positive force in their team and around their colleagues. She has demonstrated UTM’s Fair Play Code across different UTM sports programs, from tri-campus sports to learn to play. Laura leads by example, sharing her passion and enthusiasm for the sport and demonstrating what it means to be a true team player. |
UTM Fair Play Award Taaha Butt | Taaha is a resilient leader who has led his team through a challenging season. He has kept the team spirit and have celebrated through the highs and lows. His passion was evident in his consistent effort in bringing the same dedication and hard work to every game. |
UTM Fair Play Award Valentina Leo | Valentina is a true teamplayer who always uplifts her teammates as a positive, and encouraging force on the team. On the court she plays with intensity and is a vocal leader that communicates exceptionally with all members of the team. Off the court, she is the first person on their feet to cheer on their teammates and celebrate the accomplishments of others. |
UTM Fair Play Award Siddharth Naik | Siddharth brings a great deal of maturity, sportsmanship and dedication and is only in his first year at UTM! He embodies the Eagles high standard of Fair Play and was directly responsible for UTM being recognized as the Fair Play Recipient in one of the OCR Cricket Tournaments. The concern and care for the team was evident in the respect and recognition UTM received from umpires and other Colleges. |
Tri-Campus Coach of the Year Armaan Hayer | Armaan has demonstrated outstanding leadership, performance and human insight. He has inspired his team through impactful mentorship and greatly improved the overall performance of their team. Armaan has instilled the deep value of collective success and what it means to play as a UTM Eagle. |
James J. Rae – Women’s Athlete of the Year Jordan Pawlowski | Jordan shines on the field with their talent and passion for the sport. She is an outstanding athlete who was an integral part of their team’s success. A humble leader who openly shares her knowledge and creates opportunities for her teammates to grow and hone their skills. She has an incredible ability to make those around them feel included, valued, and cared for; a dependable leader who’s impact will be missed in the next season. |
J. Tuzo Wilson – Men’s Athlete of the Year Keshan Jerome Mahendra | Jerome is a constant part of the volleyball community at UTM, whether it is drop-in, intramurals, or tri-campus team. His familiar face often greets his peers with a smile, and has fostered a supportive atmosphere within our various sport programs, offering words of encouragement and advice to their peers. Jerome constantly seeks for opportunities to grow and hone his skills, consistently putting in the work to become a better athlete and teammate. |

Yulina has been participating in the UTM Intramurals program in a variety of sports since starting her post-secondary studies here at UTM. She has made significant contributions to the experience of other participants by being a leader amongst her peers regardless of what team or sport. Mentioned by nominators, Yulina has a very positive mindset and encourages people to participate. No matter the outcome of the game, Yulina always appreciate the efforts of all teammates and provides support when needed. |

Ahmad has participated in multiple sport leagues and tournaments in the Intramurals Programs since 2019. Ahmad has not only been a leader amongst his peers and demonstrated good sportsmanship but also as teammate and leader who is welcoming and always wanting to have fun through sports. Ahmad has also contributed to the UTM Intramurals program by officiating both soccer and basketball for numerous semesters and is described by his peers as a well-rounded and caring individual. |

Taaha's outstanding performance as a student-athlete in volleyball has been exceptional, but it's his contributions to the team outside the court that truly makes Taaha stand out. Taaha’s commitment to the team, supportiveness, and ability to be a team player have not gone unnoticed. He is described by his peers as someone who extremely good at mediating issues that arise and understands everyone's thoughts, feelings and emotions. Not only does Taaha have the most set assist this past year for the Men’s Tri-Campus Volleyball team but he shows up with a positive attitude and tries to make everyone feel at home |

Both coaches have been described by multiple nominators as not only knowledgeable and experienced in each of their sports but truly care about each individual involved with their respective teams. Coach Krista and Coach Howard are always striving for their student-athletes to excel both on the playing surface and in the classroom. The immense passion, dedication and commitment that both Coach Howard & Coach Krista display is impressive and therefore, well-deserving of this award. |

Fathema is described by many as an extremely driven, respectful and constantly striving for excellence. Fathema involvement goes beyond her sport team and participation within sport programs here at UTM, as she has held numerous positions within the department during her time as a student in addition to her involvement across the UTM campus. She has always been an advocate and welcomes all UTM students to get involved in the variety of sport programs. Fathema was recently awarded the Principal's Award of Excellence in Student Leadership. |

Andreas is described by multiple peers as an individual who strives to become a better person every day. He has been invaluable to the basketball team’s success this past season and has been a dependable leader on and off the court. His involvement within the Department as a student trainer goes above and beyond the role. Andreas is one to help ensure his peers feel included and supported which embodies what it means to be an eagle. Andreas consistently encourages students to get involved and is seen spreading positive vibes to all those who come to the RAWC. |

Soraya joined UTM Intramurals in the Fall of 2021 where she has an outstanding knowledge base of basketball. In her time as a referee she expanded her sport officiating portfolio by becoming a referee for Outdoor Soccer in the Fall. Soraya is also a Game Manager within UTM Intramurals and a member of a Tri-Campus Women’s Basketball team. |

BenJohn performed the Game Manager duties for Spikeball and Badminton in the Fall Semester. He resumed his Badminton duties in the Winter and added Basketball to his portfolio. BenJohn was a model employee, always showing up on time and bringing attention to detail to all his duties during his shift. He wouldn’t hesitate to ask questions and follow up to ensure everything was being done correctly and provide suggestions for improvement. Thomas Verdier was a member of our Tri-Campus Men’s Soccer team and showed great commitment and dedication to the team. He even proceeded to take the bus early to head down to support the Women’s Indoor Soccer Tri-Campus teams championship game Thomas has demonstrated an ability to will himself through difficult situations whether in-game or off the pitch. He has demonstrated great leadership abilities that increased the level of play for the rest of the team. |

Joy Pius was dedicated and detail oriented in juggling the many requirements we had to enforce for our Intramural program. Joy brought excellent communication skills and her positive personality to pass along to students all the necessary items they needed to properly check-in and participate in their Intramural games. Joy also went beyond her duties to help us with spectators for our Tri-Campus home games. |

Fatima Khalid was one of our sport assistants and also worked as part of our Tri-Campus game day staff. Fatima’s positive nature makes those better around her and would always ask questions to ensure she was completing her tasks correctly. Fatima spent a great detail of time behind the scenes, helping us with many tasks for Intramurals, Tri-Campus and also for helping with the award ceremony this year |

Janella Viado was an instrumental part of our Tri-Campus Basketball teams. A leader on and off the court with the Women’s team, she volunteered her time to help at with the Men’s team in a mentorship coaching role. Janella was a huge part of the Tri-Campus women’s team bringing home the championship banner and was a positive influence on those around her. |

Jessica leads by example both on and off the court. She consistently puts in the work and inspires her teammates to play harder and stay focused on a common goal. She encourages putting words into action and plays in a confident, competitive, and controlled manner. Not only was she a standout player on the court this season, Jess’ energy helps to create a positive team environment since she is always there to support her teammates, both as a Captain and as a friend. We were lucky to have Jessica work at the welcome desk in one of our student roles, and no doubt she displayed exceptional customer service skills to her fellow students and staff who were using the RAWC. |

Sydney is a natural-born leader who brought a lead-by-example style of leadership to the Eagles, along with a fantastic sense of humour and an even greater sense of purpose. She was one of our most consistent competitors during her time at UTM; you never had to worry if Sydney would “show up” for a game because she always showed up, brought immense effort, and was positive and constantly leading the charge no matter the game situation. Additionally, she was truly our strong link on the team that helped bridge social connections that are vital to success in a team sport. |

Dyllan has been an active student member in the RAWC, primarily within soccer and basketball. He participated in intramural indoor and outdoor soccer and basketball. He was also a key member of the Men’s Tri-Campus Indoor Soccer team. A highlight of the season was Dyllan’s ever important goal in penalty kicks to seal the semi-final victory for the team and allowing them to advance to the finals. Dyllan brings an effort & intensity on the field that is unmatched by anyone else on the pitch. He has shown his dedication and commitment through his years playing soccer for UTM. |
