Appealing a Decision

Students who have requested graduation and are considering submitting a petition or appeal are encouraged to do so as early as possible (i.e., 4 months or more in advance of planned convocation period).

Efforts are made to prioritize petitions for students who have requested graduation. However, there is no guarantee that your petition or appeal will be processed in time for graduation confirmation, or that the petition outcome will permit you to graduate as planned, and you may be expected to postpone your graduation to the next convocation period.

Graduating students who are considering submitting a petition or an appeal are strongly encouraged to speak first with an Academic Advisor in the Office of the Registrar.

If your original petition is denied, you may consider initiating an appeal if you have strong grounds to request a re-evaluation. Through a written statement, an appeal will escalate your case for re-consideration each time your petition is denied, up to three times.

Before submitting an appeal, please meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss your situation. Additionally, you should be prepared to submit new or additional supporting documentation in order to strengthen your case.

Appeal Process:

Appeal to the Committee on Standing (COS) within 90 days of the original petition decision. Your appeal must include new information that was not submitted in the initial petition request. Your appeal statement will represent you at the COS meeting. It should be written as efficiently, clearly, and as logically as possible. Appeals must be submitted through AskRegistrar by following the steps below:

  1. Select the Petitions category, and Appeal Submission as the topic.
  2. Enter the petition tracking number of the petition you are appealing.
  3. Upload your appeal statement and any supporting documentation in a PDF format.

If your appeal to COS is denied, you may escalate the matter.

Appeal to the Academic Appeals Subcommittee (AAS) within 90 days of the COS appeal decision by submitting the Academic Appeals Subcommittee Form to academicappeals.utm@utoronto.ca. At the hearing, students have the opportunity to present their appeal in person. For more information, including the process, FAQs, and resources see the Academic Appeals website.

AAS is the final group at U of T Mississauga to review your case. If your appeal is denied, you may escalate the matter to U of T's Academic Appeals Committee of the Academic Board of Governing Council.

Appeal to the Academic Appeals Committee of the Academic Board of Governing Council within 90 days of the AAS appeal decision. This is the final avenue of appeal within the University of Toronto. Students looking to file an appeal with this committee should submit a Notice of Appeal Form and carefully review the instructions outlined on the Academic Appeals of Governing Council website.
