Letter of Permission

On this page

A letter of permission (LOP) is required if you wish to take courses at another degree-granting institution, and have those credits applied toward your U of T degree. Before you enrol at a host university, a LOP from the Office of the Registrar must be granted.

Eligibility, Restrictions & Conditions

  • be pursuing an undergraduate degree at U of T Mississauga
  • be in good academic standing with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 1.50 or above
  • be in good financial standing (no administrative or financial holds)
  • not have already received credit for a similar course(s)
  • have fewer than 10 transfer credits or 5 post-admission transfer credits ("post-admission" refers to studies you completed elsewhere after being admitted to U of T Mississauga, including courses taken via LOP or international exchange).

  • the Canadian university must be a member of the Universities Canada*; or
  • the institution must be an internationally recognized degree granting university

*Due to their proximity to the three U of T campuses, we do not normally grant Letters of Permission for York or Toronto Metropolitan University. Extenuating circumstances must be listed as part of your application in order to be considered (i.e., a similar course is not offered at any U of T campus during the same session).

Course Loads

  • Students can receive up to 2.0 transfer credits for courses completed during the Summer session
  • Students can receive up up to 5.0 transfer credits for courses completed during the Fall/Winter session (with a maximum of up to 2.5 credits for each of the Fall and Winter terms)
  • Courses must not exceed the University of Toronto Mississauga's maximum term loads. For course overloads, permission must be sought through the Registrar's Office.

Course Requirements

  • Courses should have a similar number of instructional hours and duration as a University of Toronto Mississauga course. Intersession courses and significantly condensed formats may not be eligible for transfer credit.
  • Letters of permission are not intended to be used for equivalent courses offered at UTM in the same session.
  • A course must be completed and assigned a final mark of 60% or higher to receive transfer credit (provided that the passing mark is 50%). Courses that are completed on a pass/fail or credit/no credit are not eligible.

Transfer Credits

  • Transfer credits from other institutions, including online or distance courses, are granted at the sole discretion of the University of Toronto Mississauga.
  • The official transcript from the host university must indicate that you were registered as a non-degree, visiting or special student. You may be disqualified from receiving transfer credit for completed courses if the host university indicates that you were registered in a degree program.
  • Transfer credits are not granted for courses taken in Faculty of Law, Medicine, Education, Engineering, or those that are practical, clinical, or an internship.
  • Courses taken at another university without a Letter of Permission are not eligible for credit toward your U of T degree.

Third-party, Distance or Online Courses

  • Courses offered through third-party affiliations will not be eligible for transfer credit assessment.
  • Requests for distance or online courses will be considered on a case-by-case basis for extenuating circumstances. Your reasons must be clearly stated as part of your application.

Commerce or Management Courses

  • Only students enrolled in a Commerce or Management program at U of T Mississauga may earn Commerce or Management equivalencies on a Letter of Permission.
  • Students not enrolled in a Commerce or Management program at U of T Mississauga may receive a generic transfer credit (i.e., SSC1**H5).

CCIT Courses

  • Only students enrolled in a Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (CCIT) program at U of T Mississauga may earn CCIT equivalencies on a Letter of Permission.
  • Students not enrolled in a CCIT program at U of T Mississauga may receive a generic transfer credit (i.e., SSC1**H5).

Economic Courses

  • Prerequisites must be met before receiving "ECO" transfer credits for Economics courses completed at other institutions. Students completing courses at other institutions that are reviewed as eligible for transfer credit, but have not completed the prerequisites for "ECO" credit, may receive generic credit (e.g. SSC1**H5).

Language Courses

  • Students wishing to take a non-credit French course (e.g., Canada's Explore program) and want this course be considered for credit toward their degree must contact the French Program Coordinator before beginning their course. They must take the French Placement Test both before and after the course.
  • You may be required to have an interview with the Departmental Advisor and/or write a placement test once you have completed a language course elsewhere in order for the course to count towards your degree.
  • You can only receive a U of T Mississauga equivalency for a completed language course that is evaluated at a higher level than your last examined level. For example, you cannot receive transfer credit for a 100-level French course if you have already completed a 200-level French course.

Before you apply

  • Check the UTM Academic Calendar. Before you enrol in any course, check the course prerequisites, corequisites and exclusions to ensure that your selection of courses is applicable.

Notes:

Course(s) taken at the host university will be listed on your academic transcript, but the grade will not be included in your U of T cumulative grade point average.

Due to time restraints, completing an LOP in the Fall/Winter session for your final degree credit(s) will not guarantee eligibility to convocate at the Spring Convocation. Similarly, courses taken in the Summer session will not guarantee eligibility to convocate at the Fall Convocation.
