Course Overload

Deadline

Before enrolling in courses, and no later than the first day of classes in that term.

Note: it is your responsibility as a student to ensure there are no conflicts in your schedule. An overload will not be considered if there is a conflict.

The standard course load for a full-time student is 6.0 credits in the Fall-Winter session (or 3.0 credits per term), and 2.0 credits in the Summer session (or 1.0 credit per term). Students who wish to exceed this course load are advised to plan ahead and submit a petition before the next term begins. Your petition statement should include an explanation for why an overload is needed as well as an outline of your anticipated credit maximum for the entire summer  or fall/winter (i.e. how many credits you intend to enrol in for F Term and/or S Term). This will ensure that your petition is properly assessed and helps to reduce delays in processing.  If you have supporting documentation, you may upload them in PDF format to AskRegistrar, under the 'Petition' category.

Eligibility

A petition for a course overload will only be considered for students who meet the following conditions at the minimum:

  • will be graduating at the next ceremony and have earned a minimum CGPA of 1.85
            - Fall graduates may request a Summer session overload
            - Spring graduates may request a Fall or Winter term overload
  • will be graduating in a future ceremony and have earned a minimum CGPA of 2.70

Course overload requests for enrolment into waitlisted courses are unlikely to be granted. This process is managed by the Office of the Registrar and there is only one opportunity to appeal a refused decision. Appeals should be submitted in writing to the Office of the Registrar. All appeal decisions are final.
