UTM Posting Guidelines

UTM Posting Guidelines for Student Organizations

UofT-recognized student organizations, and individuals acting on their behalf, may post materials on campus if they follow campus posting guidelines and are compliant with other relevant rules, regulations and laws. UTM restricts unauthorized postings and banners, and restricts otherwise authorized postings and banners that detract from the safety or use of campus.

The general rule is don’t post materials on surfaces that aren’t specifically for that purpose.

  • Post on campus-provided cork bulletin boards, backboards and tack strips designated for general use, using tacks or push-pins.
  • Do not use a staple gun, nails, tape, straight-pins, glue/adhesives, or stickers.
  • When posting event promotions, note the event date, then remove posted materials immediately after the event’s date has passed.
  • Do not post several copies of the same material on a bulletin board, backboard or tack strip, so that space is available for others too.
  • Note that postings may be removed by others, over which the campus has limited control.

As examples, postings and banners are prohibited on and must not block:

  • Safety equipment, including fire alarm activators/pulls, fire hose cabinets, fire extinguishers
  • Electrical outlets and fixtures, thermostats
  • Glass doors, windows, and other glass or similar surfaces
  •  Floors, stairs, walls, ceilings, columns, classroom doors, blackboards, bulkheads/piers, balcony railings, stair railings, seating
  • Bathroom stalls, plumbing fixtures, dispensers
  • Way-finding, safety and other signage
  • Screens, monitors, phones, intercoms, display cases, showcases
  • Vending machines, copiers, change machines, card readers
  • Building exteriors, fences, trees, boulders, trash receptacles, poles, parking meters and ticket dispensers, walkways, permanent signage
  • Campus-managed or department-managed bulletin boards assigned for specific messaging

Additionally:

  • Postings and banners must not be staked into the ground
  • Postings and banners must not be attached to trees or plants
  • Postings and banners must not block or interfere with the use of passageways
  • Helium-filled balloons must not be distributed or used.

Postings and banners must not mark or damage the underlying surfaces. If you are unsure of a surface’s suitability, consult UTM Building Services for advice in advance (905-828-5376 or 905-569-4830).

Posted material that is in violation of these guidelines may be removed and disposed of at any time. The University is not responsible for any costs related to damage or destruction of postings, and may seek reimbursement of its costs for related cleaning and/or repairs from the student organization responsible for the election, which may choose to pass costs on to the relevant candidate(s), sponsor(s) and/or the individual(s) posting the material.
