Choosing Your Program
Your program of study (also known as a subject POSt) is a grouping of courses in a specific discipline. Once you have earned 4.0 credits (or if you are on track to complete them by the end of the session), you are eligible to add or apply for your program of study on ACORN. As you explore your options and decide on your program(s), you will need to meet one of the following combinations:
- One Specialist
- Two Majors
- One Major and Two Minors
Good to Know:
- How many credits do you need for a Specialist versus a Major or Minor?
- Program requirements can be found in the online Academic Calendar.
- As a UTM student, you can only enrol in programs offered at the UTM campus.
- The degree you earn is determined by what program(s) you pursue. See the Academic Calendar for more info!
Type 1, 2 and 3 Programs
Every program offered at U of T Mississauga has been assigned a specific program type in order to easily determine whether spaces are limited or unlimited, whether there are entry requirements you need to meet, and whether enrolment is automatic or requested.
There are three program types as outlined below:
Program Type | Entry Requirements |

Choosing Alternative Programs
You may have come to UTM with a program in mind, a set career plan, or a vision of what you want to achieve during your undergraduate career.
As you learn more about yourself, and the programs our campus has to offer, we want you to know that it is normal for your dreams and goals to change. Many students experience this after their first year.
It is common that students change between specialists, majors, minors that better align with their interests, skills, and strengths. Perhaps your plans have not changed entirely, and you are looking to combine programs instead of focusing on just one. If this sounds like you, this is a great time to meet with an Academic Advisor in the Office of the Registrar to help you plan your courses, and with a Career Counsellor to help you explore your future options.
If you were refused from your program, you may have many questions about what to do next, whether you'll try again during the next application phase, or you might wonder who to reach out to. Our Academic Advisors can help you with this transition and offer you helpful strategies to help you re-focus and map out your next steps. Check out the recording of the Refused from Your Program? Next Steps and Future Options webinar.
Alternative Program Options for Type 3 Programs
Type 3 programs are among the most competitive programs at UTM as spaces in these programs are limited, and students must meet specific program entry requirements. For suggestions on alternative program options to competitive Type 3 programs, download our guide, Seeking New Heights: Alternative Program Options.
To learn more about these programs, you can consult the Academic Calendar, UTM Program Plans, and Careers by Major.
