This Guide is designed to simplify course enrolment, paying your fees, and everything in-between. It will guide you through these steps so that you can focus less on how to do it, and more on what's really important – your goals and how to best achieve them. 

The 2 steps to registration include enrolling into your courses on ACORN and paying or deferring your fees by the deadline to reserve your spot in the courses you chose.

What You'll Need

  • Use the Academic Calendar to explore the courses and programs at U of T Mississauga.
  • The UTM Timetable lists the courses offered for the upcoming year, when and where they take place, and important enrolment information such as enrolment controls.
  • ACORN maintains a record of your academic history and performance. You will use it to enrol in courses, view grades and tuition fees, and much more. To login, use your JOINid/UTORid and password. TIP: Check out the ACORN how-to guide for step-by-step tutorials on how to use it!

When Do Classes Begin and End?

  • F courses: September 6 - December 5
  • Y courses: September 6 - April 5
  • S courses: January 7 - April 5

Your Registration Status

On ACORN, you will have one of three statuses for the Fall 2018 - Winter 2019 session: 

  • You are invited to enrol in courses for the upcoming session and/or you have selected courses.
  • If you made a recent payment, it has not yet been received.
  • You have enrolled in at least one course, and your tuition payment or fee deferral has been accepted. Your registration is complete! 
Financially Cancelled

There are academic and financial reasons to explain why this status appears on your ACORN account.

  • You enrolled in courses, but missed the deadline to pay or defer your fees. If you wish to take courses, and register for the upcoming session, please read the instructions on late registration carefully.


  • No action was taken. You did not enrol in courses for the upcoming session, and the deadline to register has passed. This status has been placed on your account to reflect that you are not currently registered, and therefore, no fees will be charged for the session.


  • You have been placed on academic suspension. Please review your academic history on ACORN. Students on suspension will  receive an official email from the Office of the Registrar regarding the terms of their suspension.

Late Registration

Students who are financially cancelled may submit a request for late registration in order to add courses on ACORN.

A late fee of $44 plus $5 for each additional weekday will apply to any student who wishes to reinstate their registration after being removed from courses for non-payment of fees, or for students who enrol in courses for the first time as of:

  • August 30 for F and/or Y courses
  • December 14 for S courses only

Understanding Your U of T Degree 

New graduate at Convocation

A standard U of T degree is made up of 20.0 credits. Throughout your time at U of T Mississauga, you will complete: 

  • Degree requirements 
  • Program requirements 
  • Distribution requirements 
  • Electives (courses outside of your program of study)

Degree Requirements 

U of T Mississauga offers the following degrees:

Follow the degree requirements listed in the Academic Calendar for the session you were admitted to the university as a degree student (i.e., If you were admitted to the university beginning September 2018, you would follow the degree requirements listed in the 2018-2019 Academic Calendar). 

Program Requirements 

You may choose to specialize and concentrate your studies in one academic discipline, or combine your interests: 

  • 1 Specialist or
  • 2 Majors or
  • 1 Major + 2 Minors 

You are eligible to choose a program or combination of programs on ACORN once you have completed 4.0 credits.

Follow the program requirements listed in the Academic Calendar for the session that you enrolled in the program (i.e., If you enrolled in a program in the Summer of 2018, you would follow the program requirements listed in the 2018-2019 Academic Calendar). 

Distribution Requirements 

Over the course of your degree, you must complete at least 1.0 credit from the following divisions: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences. Distribution requirements are an important part of your degree requirements. Click here to learn more.


Elective courses are courses outside of your program of study.

We'll guide you through how to check your course enrolment start time, how to plan your courses, how to build a weekly schedule, what to do if you are unable to add a course, and more.

Full-Time vs. Part-Time Status

  • Students enrolled in 3.0 credits or more in the Fall-Winter session are considered full-time.
  • Students enrolled in 2.5 credits or less are considered part-time

ACORN will allow you to enrol or waitlist in a maximum of 2.5 credits in each term (or 3.0 credits beginning July 27). If you are waitlisted in the maximum number of credits, and need additional courses, you must be prepared to make a decision on whether to remain on the waitlist, or remove yourself from the waitlist in order to add a course with available space.

Note: Full-time and part-time status for OSAP is assessed differently. See the OSAP section for more information. 

Are you on Academic Probation?

We highly recommend that you meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss an academic plan for the upcoming year. It's very important that you select courses that will help you achieve good standing, or to be eligible to continue on probation at the end of the Winter session. 

Note: Academic probation with the University is not the same as OSAP probation.

Graduating Students

We're committed to ensuring that graduating students can enrol in a set of courses that will allow them to graduate in a normal period of time. This commitment depends upon the student doing all that is necessary at the optimum and appropriate times as indicated in this guide and in the Academic Calendar.

Students must have enrolled in appropriate programs (changes to program in the final year of graduation may not be considered), completed appropriate prerequisites, and requested courses from a full range of the possible options that would allow them to complete their program and degree. Students must have used ACORN to attempt to enrol in these courses at the earliest possible opportunity.

If students are still unable to obtain required courses for graduation, they should meet with an Academic Advisor in the Office of the Registrar during the first registration period to receive guidance on their next steps.

Use Degree Explorer to review your degree and program requirements. If you have any questions about your degree requirements you should meet with an Academic Advisor in the Office of the Registrar. Please meet with your undergraduate department advisor to review your program requirements. 

  • If you have confirmed your request to graduate, check Degree Explorer at the end of March to see if your Subject POSts have been confirmed by the relevant department(s)
  • You can view your eligibility to graduate in early May.

Students who appear as though they may complete 20.0 credits will have a request to graduate entered onto their ACORN record. Students who confirm their request to graduate and are assessed as “complete” will have their degrees conferred at the next available convocation ceremony whether or not they are able to attend.

Your start time is determined by your year of study. Your year of study is defined by the total number of credits you have earned, or expect to earn, by the end of August.

Degree students can view their personal course enrolment start time on ACORN by clicking "Enrol and Manage" from the Academics menu option.

Understanding Your Fees

Tuition Fees

Fees are determined by the number of credits you take and by the program you are enrolled in.

Some programs are deregulated, meaning they have higher fees and a different fee structure. Refer to the Fees for Deregulated Programs section of the Program Selection Guide for details. It is important to be aware of the fee structure before adding a deregulated program. 

Incidental Fees 

These fees support student services such as athletics and recreation, student societies, and more. Incidental fees vary for full-time and part-time students. If you are enrolled full-time (3.0 credits or more), and then drop to part-time, you should do this within the 100% refund period, otherwise, you will be subject to full-time incidental fees. 

Ancillary Fees

These fees are associated with your program of study and specific academic activities such as lab or studio fees.

International Fees

International students are charged higher tuition fees than domestic students.  Determine whether you may be eligible for an international fee exemption.

Paying or Deferring Fees to Register

Now that you have selected at least one course, make a minimum tuition fee payment (found on your ACORN invoice) or defer your fees (if eligible) to become a registered student. Students who miss the deadline are at risk of being financially cancelled and removed from all courses.

Tuition Invoice

You can find a breakdown of your tuition fees on ACORN by clicking on the Finances menu, and selecting the "View invoice" button. Your invoice will show your upcoming fees for each session that you enrol in. 

If you have enrolled in at least one course, you will be able to view your invoice on ACORN starting July 16. Invoices are not mailed, but you may print them anytime using your internet browser settings.

Returning Students

Please ensure that you have paid off all outstanding fees from a previous session, in addition to making your tuition deposit for the Fall-Winter session. If you have financial concerns, please speak with a Financial Aid Advisor immediately.

Students with ONLY Waitlisted/Interim/Requested Courses

Your invoice will display $0 owing balance for until you secure a spot in the course. However, you must make an advanced minimum payment of $278 to reserve your spot. You may pay your fees by any of the options outlined below, with the exception of credit card. ACORN does not support advance payments if your current balance is $0.

This minimum charge is refundable if you do not get into your course(s), and do not enrol in further classes. 

Payment Options

There are different options available to make it convenient for you to pay your tuition fees through your bank or financial institution.

After you make a payment, keep a receipt or proof of payment until it is credited to your ACORN account. Screenshots are acceptable if you made a payment online. Please allow up to 7 business days for your payment to process, and up to 14 business days for payments made outside of Canada.

Select the payment option of your choice: 

Internet, Telephone, or ATM

  • Set up a new bill and register the University of Toronto as a payee. 
  • Enter your U of T account number, which can be found on the upper right hand corner of your invoice (LASTNAME1234567890).

In Person at Your Bank

  • Print a copy of your invoice directly from ACORN using your Internet browser settings. Most banks accept printed copies.
  • Payments at the Registrar's Office for tuition are not accepted.

Credit Card Payments on ACORN

Once your tuition fee invoice is posted with your upcoming balance, you will be able to make your payment using a credit card. 

  1. Login to ACORN to view your fees beginning July 16 
  2. Under the Finances menu, select "Make a Payment" using the credit card option.
  3. View the online tutorial if needed.

A few important notes

  • It takes 2-3 business days for your payment to be processed successfully.
  • A non-refundable fee calculated at 1.75% of your payments is charged by Moneris.
  • Non-Canadian dollar denominated credit card fee payments will be subject to foreign exchange rates and fees determined by your credit card company.
  • ACORN will not accept payment by credit card if your balance is $0.00. 

HigherEd Points 

  • Convert Aeroplan Miles and TD Travel Rewards Program points into $250 worth of credits that you can use toward your fees.

Western Union GlobalPay (Payments made outside of Canada)

  • Pay your tuition fees at a local bank using the equivalent Canadian dollar amount
  • Allow up to 14 business days for bank processing

Fee Deferral

A fee deferral allows eligible students to officially register for their studies by the registration deadline without having to make a fee payment until a later date. 


  • If you have applied for, and are receiving OSAP or an out-of-province loan


  • If your scholarship/award covers your minimum required payment, and you do not have outstanding fees, bring a copy of your scholarship letter to the Office of the Registrar to request a fee deferral. 

Requesting a Fee Deferral on ACORN 

  1. Log into ACORN.
  2. Select "Fee Deferral" from the left-hand menu under Finances.
  3. Read the terms and conditions carefully. Accept when you are ready.
  4. Click the button to request a fee deferral.

You will know immediately whether or not your deferral request is successful.

Payment Schedule (September - April)

Fees that remain unpaid by the published deadlines will incur a monthly service charge of 1.5% compounded (19.56% annum). 

We can help you minimize or avoid service charges on your tuition fees during the year. Here are our tips and suggestions, as well as a payment schedule to help keep you on track: 

  • Avoid service charges by paying your fees in full or
  • Minimize service charges by making monthly payments. 
  • If you make changes to your course load, or get into a requested/interim/waitlisted course, check your invoice for updates and make your payments on time. 
  • Drop courses by the refund deadline, if applicable.

Tuition Fee Refunds

If you are considering dropping a course, it is important to be aware of the relevant academic and financial drop deadlines and possible implications. After considering your options, if you decide that dropping a course is right for you, do so on ACORN by the relevant deadline.

Refund Deadlines

The Dates & Deadlines page includes the deadlines to receive full or partial refunds for dropped courses, and the last day to drop a course and have it removed from your academic record.

UTM students who enrol in courses at other U of T divisions (Scarborough or St. George) follow the UTM academic and financial drop dates, with the exception of the deadline to request a late withdrawal after the drop date (LWD) or Credit/No Credit.

Students who rely on OSAP or other government aid should speak with a Financial Aid Advisor before dropping a course. In some cases, dropping courses may result in significant changes to your funding and jeopardize future funding eligibility. 

Cancelling Your Registration 

Should you decide to drop all of your courses in the Fall-Winter Session, ACORN will ask if you would like to cancel your registration before you drop your final course. If you are sure that you do not intend to enrol in other courses in the Summer session, cancel your registration. Cancelling your registration will trigger a full or partial refund of incidental/ancillary fees if you do so within the appropriate time frames.
