Dr. Simon Tang is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Management & Innovation, and an industry leader in cybersecurity and technology risk. A former Partner at Deloitte Canada, he served as the firm’s National Leader for Cyber Hacking and Payment Security practices, advising global organizations on network resilience, internet security, and emerging digital threats. Widely recognized as an authority in the field, he has been frequently interviewed by national media on matters of cybersecurity and data protection.

Simon’s passion for technology began early. At just nine years old, he modified the programming of a slot machine computer game to improve his odds of winning – an experience that sparked a lifelong curiosity about how systems work and how they can be strengthened. Following his father’s footsteps, he initially pursued accounting studies at university and articled at a CPA firm in Michigan. After earning his CPA designation in Michigan, as well as his CA and CPA designations in Ontario, he pivoted toward cybersecurity and technology risk, spending a 21-year career at Deloitte Canada.

Since 2004, Dr. Tang has taught in the Master of Management and Professional Accounting (MMPA) program, where he is a strong advocate for integrating technology literacy into accounting and business education. He emphasizes the critical importance of understanding cybersecurity, data governance, and system risk in modern financial practice. Drawing on decades of industry leadership, he bridges the gap between accounting theory and technological reality, equipping students with the practical insight needed to navigate an increasingly digital profession.

Dr. Tang holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Northwood University, a master’s degree in information management from Central Michigan University, an MBA from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Management from Case Western Reserve University. His research interests include complex systems, auditing, business ethics, and machine learning, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry and innovation.

Outside the classroom, Simon is an avid gamer with a longstanding interest in digital systems and virtual economies. At one point, he engineered a redundant home network to support his MMORPG gaming – an endeavor that mirrors his professional dedication to system reliability and performance. Today, he continues to explore a wide variety of games and remains fascinated by the business models and technological evolution shaping the global gaming industry.
