About the Program

The Language Teaching and Learning programs are specially designed to provide a comprehensive study of how languages are taught and learned, whether in a second or foreign language context. This program focuses on French and Italian.

Specialist

After completing your first year, you'll be asked to confirm what program(s) you wish to study – your Programs of Study. They can be integrated in unique ways to obtain your U of T degree, but must be one of the following three combinations: one Specialist; or two Majors; or one Major and two Minors. You don't need to worry about that now, but if you'd like to learn more about this process, watch our handy video (7 min).

Admission Requirements

You apply to an admission category, which is a collection of similar programs. Once you've accepted an offer of admission to our campus, we go into greater detail about specific program and course selection options.

At the end of your first year, you will choose your program(s), which means that your first year is an excellent opportunity to explore the full breadth of offerings.

Regardless of what you study, remember that you will receive a prestigious University of Toronto degree when you graduate that tells everyone that you are ranked among the best in the world!

The admission average is calculated with English (ENG4U) plus the next best five Grade 12 U or M courses. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee you admission to the University. Admission is subject to space availability and competition.

After completing her PhD in theoretical linguistics at U of T in 2001, Mihaela Pirvulescu felt something was missing. So she found the necessary component to make her research more satisfying by incorporating youngsters into the mix and they now inform practically all aspects of her life.

Roberto Benigni

Renowned Italian film stars Roberto Benigni and Nicoletta Braschi visited U of T Mississauga as part of a celebration of convocation and Italian heritage. The award-winning actors were special guests at the 2015 UTM Arts convocation ceremony, where they received honorary doctor of law degrees in recognition of their respective contributions to Italian arts and culture.

La Revue Moderne

In his new book, La révolution du magazine au Québec, Adrien Rannaud demonstrates how one of Quebec’s first magazines both reflected and advanced literature and culture over its run from 1919 to 1960, and how its impact is still evident today.

Courses You Would Love

Audience

Through observation, active participation, and reflection on the processes involved when learning French language and culture, students will use their knowledge of French, and other languages, to enhance communicative skills through drama.

This course is designed to enhance students' Italian language skills through digital writing, editing, and translating. Projects include media production, digital analysis of primary texts, and comparisons between human-generated and computer-generated translations.

Video Conference

This course will conduct a critical appraisal of online course materials, and formulate appropriate pedagogical strategies for their exploitation. This course is taught in English and is open to students from other disciplines.

The Education Studies minor is for students interested in a variety of careers that involve educating and training others. Students will develop an understanding of the format and the rationale for particular instructional strategies, teaching methodologies, andragogy and pedagogy.

The linguistics programs at UTM provide a solid foundation in the core theoretical fields of linguistics, covering the structure of sounds, words, sentences, and meaning, as well as a wide selection of courses in areas such as language variation and change, experimental linguistics, first and second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, language teaching and learning, and computational linguistics.
