About the Program

The Italian program at U of T Mississauga is designed to provide a comprehensive study of the many facets of Italy, a country whose culture continues to be a significant force in the shaping of Western civilization. Literature and cinema courses are organized around major figures, movements or genres, as well as Italian life and civilization.

Specialist, Major

After completing your first year, you'll be asked to confirm what program(s) you wish to study – your Programs of Study. They can be integrated in unique ways to obtain your U of T degree, but must be one of the following three combinations: one Specialist; or two Majors; or one Major and two Minors. You don't need to worry about that now, but if you'd like to learn more about this process, watch our handy video (7 min).

Admission Requirements

You apply to an admission category, which is a collection of similar programs. Once you've accepted an offer of admission to our campus, we go into greater detail about specific program and course selection options.

At the end of your first year, you will choose your program(s), which means that your first year is an excellent opportunity to explore the full breadth of offerings.

Regardless of what you study, remember that you will receive a prestigious University of Toronto degree when you graduate that tells everyone that you are ranked among the best in the world!

The admission average is calculated with English (ENG4U) plus the next best five Grade 12 U or M courses. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee you admission to the University. Admission is subject to space availability and competition.

Discover Your Potential

Roberto Benigni

Renowned Italian film stars Roberto Benigni and Nicoletta Braschi visited U of T Mississauga as part of a celebration of convocation and Italian heritage. The award-winning actors were special guests at the 2015 UTM Arts convocation ceremony, where they received honorary doctor of law degrees in recognition of their respective contributions to Italian arts and culture.

Italian Food

Experience Italian history and culture through food! You will cook, eat, and learn in an all-inclusive trip through Rome, Bologna, and Florence as you become ever more familiar with the history and cultural traditions of Italy along-side fellow UTM students, your professor, and a staff member.

Ciao, Professoressa

Italian Studies has been a part of UTM’s curriculum and identity since the campus (then Erindale College) first opened its doors in 1967. From its inception, Italian Studies has adopted informed classroom methods and ground-breaking research initiatives as the two core pillars of its teaching practices.

Courses You Would Love

Fashion Model

This course explores the transformation of Italian fashion, throughout the centuries. The course will examine the history of fashion in Italian theatre and literature, its presence in movies and television, and the impact it has had on the fashion industry, in Italy and abroad.

Spaghetti

This course charts the regional diversity of Italian food and examines various factors (early settlers, wars, migratory trends) that have shaped Italian culinary traditions. Students will also have the opportunity to explore their own culinary traditions.

This course is designed to enhance students' Italian language skills through digital writing, editing, and translating. Projects include media production, digital analysis of primary texts, and comparisons between human-generated and computer-generated translations.

The French program offers students a wide range of courses designed to provide the basis for the study of our French heritage. Our course offerings comprise a variety of fields: French as a language system (including Business French); critical approaches to literature; teaching and learning French (including teaching with a new technology); and the study of both French and Quebec Literatures.

Linguistics

The linguistics programs at UTM provide a solid foundation in the core theoretical fields of linguistics, covering the structure of sounds, words, sentences, and meaning, as well as a wide selection of courses in areas such as language variation and change, experimental linguistics, first and second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, language teaching and learning, and computational linguistics.
