When most people think of sustainability, they think about protecting and maintaining the environment. But environmental preservation is just one foundational pillar of sustainability. The other two are economic and social sustainability.

Social sustainability is the capacity of a community to create and maintain equitable, inclusive and resilient environments where all individuals can thrive and experience a high quality of life over the long term. This is achieved by addressing the interconnected social conditions that support well-being, such as human rights, health, social justice and equitable access to opportunities.

Key elements of social sustainability include:

  • Fair labour practices and safe working conditions.
  • Gender equity and inclusion.
  • Access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.
  • Diversity, equity and inclusion in decision-making and participatory processes.
  • Physical accessibility and the reduction of discrimination and barriers.
  • Health, safety and well-being.
  • Human rights and the protection of dignity, freedom and security.
  • Cultural preservation and respect for diverse identities, traditions and perspectives.
