Receptacle Standard

Purpose and Goals

UTM aims to increase its current waste diversion rate in the future. The Receptacle Standard is one of the many strategies and initiatives that will help the campus work towards this goal.

The standard guides waste management (recycling, landfill, and organics) at UTM as it outlines rules associated with regular waste maintenance and develops a consistent and standardized waste system across campus.

Standards

  • All waste, recycling, and organics receptacles on campus (not including Residences) will be emptied daily by the Caretaking staff under the Facilities, Management & Planning (FMP) department

  • Outside receptacles are under the responsibility of the Grounds department

  • The four streams (container recycling, paper recycling, organics, and landfill) will be lined with different coloured bags:

    • Container recycling - blue

    • Paper recycling and organics - clear

    • Landfill - black

  • Bag type and size will be consistent across campus

  • All bins must have signage and allow the signage to be easily changed

  • All bins must be accessible for maintenance and cleaning through a front-loading door or lid

  • All bins must have individually customizable lid colours, and hole shapes and sizes

  • All hallway bins must not be moved from their original location; if they need to be moved for events, they must be placed back in their original location after the end of the event

  • If a bin needs to be moved for non-event related reasons, contact the Sustainability Office
