IMI Business Minor People

Message from the Program Lead

The Minor in Business, Science and Entrepreneurship was created for science students who recognize that scientific training is strengthened when paired with an understanding of how organizations, resources, and strategic decisions shape real world outcomes. Ideas do not exist in isolation. They are developed, evaluated, funded, regulated, and implemented within institutions that operate under practical constraints. This minor is designed to help students engage thoughtfully with those realities. It provides a structured introduction to core areas of business including accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, strategy, operations, and entrepreneurship, while consistently situating these concepts in science driven contexts.

The Business Minor is housed within the Institute for Management and Innovation. IMI’s mandate emphasizes interdisciplinary education, applied learning, and engagement with real world problems. This mandate shapes both the design of the curriculum and the learning experience offered to students in the program. The program is intentionally interdisciplinary. It is not intended to replace a business degree, nor to produce specialists in any single business function. Instead, it equips science students with the language, perspective, and analytical tools needed to participate more effectively in decisions where scientific insight and organizational considerations intersect.

Students who complete the minor develop a broader understanding of how decisions are made within complex organizations. They learn to assess feasibility alongside scientific merit, to recognize trade offs, and to communicate across professional boundaries. Alumni pursue a wide range of paths including graduate and professional education, industry roles, entrepreneurial ventures, and public service. Across these pathways, the minor supports their ability to translate scientific knowledge into meaningful impact.

We welcome applications from students who are intellectually curious, motivated, and interested in engaging with perspectives beyond their primary discipline. I encourage you to consider whether this program aligns with your academic goals and to apply. I look forward to welcoming the next cohort of students to the IMI Business Minor and to supporting both incoming and current students as they work to reach their full potential.
