March 23, 2017

Students from UTM demonstrated their skills and proved the strength of the campus’s language programs last weekend in a competition held at Brock University.

Both the downtown and Scarborough campuses, as well as Waterloo, York, Trent, Brock, and Seneca College competed in the Toronto final of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition on Saturday, March 18.

CHI100 students Joanne (Jiyang) Min, Gregory Chung Nyan Hing, Oluwaseun Cardoso, and Zineb Hamaimou carried off prizes and awards.

Dr. Ruhui Ni, who teaches the Chinese language as well as Language Teaching and Learning courses at UTM’s Department of Language Studies, coached the students in their preparation for the competition and served as one of the judges.

“Other judges expressed to me how much they were amazed by the UTM students’ performance,” said Dr. Ni. “They were all very surprised that we sent four students to the competition, more than any other institution.”

This was also UTM’s first entry in the competition’s 16-year history. The performances included a 3-minute speech in Chinese and a public talent show related to Chinese culture for an audience and judges.

Chung Nyan Hing, Cardoso, and Hamaimou took home Awards of Excellence, while Min carried off third prize despite having only begun her Chinese studies this past September.  “Ms. Min has demonstrated excellent language proficiency and great potential for success in her studies,” noted Dr. Ni.

The UTM Department of Language Studies has offered Chinese Language Courses since 2008. Six elective courses in Modern Standard Chinese were offered in 2016-17.
