What is a Language Course Assessment Questionnaire / Placement Test?

Language course assessment questionnaires and placement tests are designed to assess your familiarity with a language and are used to recommend an appropriate language level course. It is important that you answer honestly and thoroughly. 

You may also be requested to participate in an oral interview.

If you are completing the French Placement Test (i.e., Test of French), it is important that you do not guess at the answer.

When should I complete it?

The Language Course Assessment Questionnaire/Placement Test should be completed as early as possible, even if you are on the waitlist for a language course.

The earlier you get the results, the more confident you can be that the course you have enrolled in is the appropriate level for you. As you build your timetable, you'll want to make sure that the language course fits with your schedule!

How do I know whether I need to complete a Language Course Assessment Questionnaire / Placement Test?

If this is your first time taking a Department of Language Studies (UTM) course in a particular language, the language course assessment questionnaire/placement test is mandatory. Please see below for our list of language course assessment questionnaires / placement tests.

If you've already completed the language course assessment questionnaire / placement test for a particular language in the past, you should not resubmit it with different responses. 

What if I don't agree with the results?

Language Course Assessment Questionnaire / Placement Test results are not petitionable, and decisions are final.

If you are completing the French Placement Test (i.e., Test of French), it is important that you do not guess at the answer.

Please also note that it is an academic offence to misrepresent your knowledge of any language (e.g., see sections 4a and 4c of the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters). There may be serious penalties for misrepresentation, as well as immediate withdrawal from the course. Any financial consequences as a result of this are the student's responsibility.

Completion of the language course assessment questionnaire is mandatory for any students enrolling in any of the UTM language courses listed below for the first time.

NOTE: Language assessment questionnaires for Fall/Winter 2025 must be submitted no later than Wednesday, August 27, 2025. 

Even if you are on the waitlist, kindly submit a language assessment questionnaire.
