The Servant of Two Masters

BY CARLO GOLDONI | DIRECTED BY AARON JAN

From the director:

The Servant of Two Masters is a farce about acquiring capital, specifically how much one man is willing to suffer to rise above his station.

I am drawn to the classism in the text, Truffaldino's hunger to attain fiscal mobility, and what the exact purpose of producing an escapist farce is in 2022. What parts of 18th century Italy are mirrored in contemporary western culture? Who is allowed to rise above their status? Who deserves our sympathy in a capitalist container? How can the poor become protagonists in a story that doesn't belong to them? I want to update what commedia can be now - by exploring the tropes and stock characters we see in reality TV and what we choose to ignore in pursuit of our own capitalist joyriding.
