Every year, the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment has striven to promote and recognize excellence among our undergraduate and graduate students for academic achievements in Geography, Environment, Geographical Information Systems and leadership.

Award Description

To be awarded to an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto Mississauga enrolled in their final year of a natural science program and who intends to pursue graduate study in the natural sciences.

This award is presented to the undergraduate student in Geography, Environment, or GIS who has produced the best Honours Thesis of the year. It is determined and presented each year by the thesis course coordinator.

The Canadian Association of Geographers Award honours the graduating student with highest overall Cumulative Grade-Point Average who is a Major or Specialist in a Geography, Environment, or GIS program.

Credit Valley Conservation is one of our long-time partners in the Geography Department and Environment Programs at UTM. The mission of the CVC Foundation is to raise funds and awareness in support of the conservation projects that protect the health and well-being of the Credit watershed and its inhabitants for today and tomorrow. This award goes to the student who completes ENV100Y5 with the highest standing and whose permanent residence is in the Credit watershed.

This prize is awarded to a third year University of Toronto Mississauga student enrolled in the Geography, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), or Environment major or specialist program within the BSc steam. The student must be engaged in a research project or thesis focused on the Credit Valley region.  

Dan was an Irish-American born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1952 who studied Geology at Salem State College and got an MSc in Physical Geography at UofT. He studied wetlands in particular and loved every aspect of fieldwork. Following his time at the Wetland Research Centre, Dan worked as a Research Associate at UTM where he taught courses, especially field courses and worked with graduate students to help implement fieldwork as part of their thesis projects. He loved to race bicycles, climb mountains, play tennis and chess, woodworking and carpentry and, of course, rocks, water and earth. Dan was a very engaged father of two sons Sim and Mohan. He died way too young of prostate cancer. This award is given to one or more upper year student(s) at UTM in the Department of Geography studying physical geography and undertaking fieldwork. The student(s) must be in good academic standing.

Professor Donald Putnam was a founding member of the Department of Geography at Erindale. Professor Putnam originally trained as an agriculture and soils scientist. He joined the faculty of the University of Toronto in 1938. Focusing on physical geography, he later authored the first published study of the glacial landforms of Southern Ontario. The award is given in memory and honour of Professor Donald Putnam, in recognition of outstanding achievement by a student in Physical Geography.

This award is given annually to a student who is a major or specialist in an Environment program, who has demonstrated academic achievement in environment-related courses as well as exceptional leadership and commitment on behalf of the environment on the University of Toronto campus or within the community.

This award is presented to a graduating student that we have identified as having demonstrated excellence as a Major or Specialist in Environmental Management.

This award is presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence as a Major or Specialist in Environmental Science.

This award was established in memory of Professor Ferko Csillag, our former departmental Chair. Ferko was a valued mentor and friend to many of us and an internationally recognized expert in geomatics and GIS. The award goes each year to an exceptional student pursuing undergraduate studies with a major in GIS or a major or specialist Geography, with demonstrated excellence in geostatistics and remote sensing. Students awarded this scholarship are encouraged to share their knowledge and demonstrate leadership through participation in a student conference or presentation.

The first paper award is given to a graduate student who is the first or sole-author on a peer reviewed article that is based on research conducted at the University of Toronto-Mississauga. Please check here for the recipient list.

This award is presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence as a Major in Geographic Information Systems.

This award is given annually to a graduate student who demonstrated a high level of service towards the department and is a leader within the graduate student community.

This prize was created in honour and memory of our long-time department member, Professor Gunter Gad. Professor Gad taught in the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment, at what was then Erindale College as well as on the St. George campus, from 1972 until 2009. He passed away in 2017 and is greatly missed. Professor Gad was committed to experiential learning and fieldwork in Geography. The prize recognizes an outstanding undergraduate student engaged in urban fieldwork and research.

Professor Howard Andrews first came to the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment at the University of Toronto in 1969. He worked mainly in the area of Urban Geography, focusing on urban structure, environmental design and cooperative housing, contemporary social theory, participation of women in the workplace, and many other themes, including his work in the community on children’s health. This award in memory of Professor Andrews honours a student who has demonstrated excellence in social and political Geography, with emphasis on social welfare and healthy cities.

This award is presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence as a Major or Specialist in Human Geography.

This award honours Dr. Ignat Kaneff, a generous philanthropist, long-time friend of UTM, and major contributor to the success of our campus. The award is given to two students each year – one 2nd year student and one 3rd year student – in recognition of outstanding academic achievement in a Geography or Environment program.

Awarded to a Year II UTM student entering Year III and enrolled in Ecology or Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto at Mississauga.

This award is presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence as a Major or Specialist in Physical Geography.

TA Award acknowledges outstanding TA contributions by graduate students. Each year, at least one award is given to contact TAs (discussion, tutorial and/or lab instructors) and at least one award is given to marking TAs.

This award is given annually to an undergraduate student who demonstrated a high level of service towards the department and is a leader within the undergraduate student community.

Awarded to the second year student registered in one of the four U of T Mississauga Environment programs with the highest Cumulative GPA. The student must have completed three or four required courses in the program. Preference is given to those who completed four courses. Registration is third year is required.
