What is a Special Considerations Request
Students are expected to complete all course work and prepare for tests in advance to meet the expectations of your course. A Special Considerations Request (SCR) ticket should only be submitted if you need an extension on an assignment or if you miss a test, but under acceptable circumstances as outlined in your syllabus. Reasons include:
- Illness
- Scheduled medical procedure
- Bereavement
- University-sponsored athletics/competitions
- Compulsory legal duties e.g. jury duty
- Emergency e.g. accident
- Religious accommodations
- Registered with Accessibility Services
You will not be granted an approved Special Considerations Request for:
- Poor internet connection
- Computer issues e.g. stolen, crashed, damaged computer
- Group assignments or in-class activities such as participation activities
- Open-book quizzes
- Delays in submissions due to system timing out
- Incorrect submissions
- Family plans or pre-purchased plane tickets e.g. wedding, vacation
- Lack of preparation or too many other tests/assignments
How to Submit a Special Considerations Request Ticket
Special Considerations Request tickets must be submitted within 24 hours of the due date of your assignment or test. Any tickets submitted after the 24 hours will be rejected.
Use the following link: https://uoft.service-now.com/utm_scr.
Fill in the Special Considerations Request form with all required information. Use your syllabus to find the correct information, such as the due date of your assignment, your course code, etc. Incorrect details can lead to your Special Considerations Request ticket being rejected.
You must include one of the following in your ticket:
- ACORN Absence Declaration: select this box if you have used your ACORN Absence Declaration. This may only be used once per semester per course, and will be verified
- Accessibility Services Registration : select this box only if you are registered with Accessibility Services. This will be verified, and incorrect selection of this box may lead to rejection of your Special Considerations Request
- Supporting Documentation: Provide any supporting documentation to confirm your absence on the assignment due date or test date. This may include a UofT Verification of Illness form, a death certificate, Jury Duty notice, etc.
You may attach your supporting documentation using the “Add Attachments” button at the bottom of the page.
Assignment Extensions
If you have submitted a Special Considerations Request ticket for an extension on your assignment, you will receive a response within approximately one week. Typical extension times, if approved, are determined by the weight of the work, and include weekends:
- Less than 10% of the course grade: maximum extension 2 days
- 10-20% of the course grade: maximum extension 5 days
- More than 20% of the course grade: maximum extension 7 days
Extension requests must be made in advance or at the latest 24 hours after the assignment due date.
Students should not wait for the Special Considerations Request ticket and submit their work as soon as they are able to. Extension decisions are based on the due date of the assignment, not on when we review your ticket. Some decisions may take longer than the extension timeline. If your assignment is submitted after the extended deadline, you will be subjected to a 10% late penalty per day including weekends.
For example, you have an assignment worth 5% due on Friday, February 21st at 9am. You submit your ticket on February 21st at 12pm. This is acceptable. If you receive a response for your ticket on Wednesday, February 26th that your extension is approved, your assignment should have been submitted by now, as you would have only received a two day extension for a 5% assignment. If you submit your assignment on Wednesday, February 26th, you will receive a late penalty, as the new due date is February 23rd.
Group assignments/presentations
If you know in advance you will be absent for a group presentation or assignment and you have an acceptable reason for your absence, email your instructor.
Missed Tests
You must submit a Special Consideration Request ticket within 24 hours of the test. If there is a final exam in your course, your missed test will be reweighed to the final exam. If your course does not have a final test, a decision will be made on a case-by-case basis, informed to you via your Special Consideration Request ticket.
Makeup tests are not always an option, do not assume you will be granted a makeup test. Submit your Special Consideration Request ticket and the committee will follow up with next steps.
A Special Considerations Request ticket cannot be submitted for a missed exam. Please refer to the Office of the Registrar for more information: https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/registrar/exams/missed-exam
