Madison Mackley is a PhD Student in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. Broadly, her work examines the relationship between contemporary datafication, information policy, and civic engagement. She also co-leads the Privacy Discussion Group at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. 

Madison's research is supported by a SSHRC Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral. Additional support has included a Schwartz Reisman Institute Graduate Fellowship, a School of Cities Graduate Fellowship, and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship.

Research

Madison's doctoral research examines public data governance, with a specific focus on the relationship between privacy law, government infrastructure, and community organizations. Her work addresses tensions between contemporary datafication and the social good by focusing on the data strategies of government institutions and community organizations in Canada across municipal, provincial, and federal levels. Through this research, Madison hopes to develop sociotechnical policy interventions that can support collective governance models.
