Description of Laboratory Decommissioning

Laboratory decommissioning is the process of safely closing a lab by the Principal Investigator (PI) when it is being vacated, relocated or renovated.

As required by applicable legislation and the University, this process ensures:

  • the safe removal and disposal of all hazardous materials including chemicals, biological agents, and radioactive materials
  • the proper decommissioning of equipment
  • the thorough cleaning and disinfection of all laboratory surfaces

These measures are essential to minimize potential risks to personnel, contractors and future occupants of the space.

In order to facilitate this process, laboratory personnel must review and follow the UTM Laboratory Decommissioning Procedure document
