Climate Positive Energy Awards
Two researchers have been awarded a 2023-2024 Climate Positive Energy Rising Stars in Sustainability Postdoctoral Fellowship to be undertaken in the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment:
- Varuni Maheshika Jayasooriya is working in the lab of Professor Matthew Adams. She will examine how the physical attributes (colour, material, surface roughness) of paved surfaces in Toronto impact energy demands through increased urban heat retention. The methodology developed in this study could further assist various cities in Canada to achieve equitable energy transition toward net zero 2050 goals; and
-
Hosea Olayiwola Patrick will study individuals' rationale, perspectives, and lived experiences on energy transmission pathways using a community-centered approach in the lab of Professor Laurel Besco.
Both Jayasooriya and Patrick will join a cross-disciplinary network of Climate Positive Energy researchers dedicated to transforming and reimagining energy systems and achieving net-negative emissions, as well as a research community engaging in an exchange of ideas across disciplines and life experiences.
This fellowship is valued at $50,000 for one year.
Congratulations to both recipients and UTM is looking forward to the contributions both postdoctoral researchers will bring to the academic community.
