Experiential Learning Bursaries 2021-22

The Experiential Education Unit (EEU) is pleased to announce that the Office of the Vice-Principal Academic and Dean will be making bursaries available to students enrolled in eligible experiential learning (EL) courses offered over the Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Winter 2022 academic terms. We hope that the availability of these bursaries will continue to grow interest in and reduce barriers to EL courses by alleviating some of the additional costs incurred by students (such as ancillary fees, equipment, and travel), advancing our goal of making EL opportunities available to all students at UTM.

The EL Bursaries program is facilitated by application and targets students with demonstrated financial need for various reasons, including costs associated with remote EL activities. Bursary amounts are determined by the EEU with respect to the EL activities in each course. Students can apply through the University of Toronto Undergraduate Grant Portal by filling out an application and attaching the EL Bursaries Cover Sheet. Applicants will be notified by e-mail once a decision has been made on their application. Bursaries will be distributed after the course drop date and are contingent upon the applicant’s continued enrolment in the eligible course(s).

Please direct all questions about the EL Bursaries program to experientialeducation [dot] utm [at] utoronto [dot] ca.

Student Eligibility

Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for an EL Bursary.

  • The student is registered in a degree program with the University of Toronto. (International students and students enrolled in degree programs at other divisions are welcome to apply.)
  • The student demonstrates financial need through the University of Toronto Undergraduate Grant Portal.
  • The student indicates on the EL Bursaries Cover Sheet that they are enrolled in one or more eligible courses offered over the Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Winter 2022 terms, as per the list of courses below. Courses marked with an asterisk (*) require participation in a specific activity to be eligible for a bursary.
  • The student continues to be enrolled in these eligible courses after the drop date.

Students with accessibility concerns are recommended to consult with Accessibility Services on campus to evaluate their needs before applying for an EL Bursary. The EEU will work closely with the Office of the Registrar, Accessibility Services, the Equity & Diversity Office, and the Indigenous Centre to ensure that the EL Bursaries program fulfills the University of Toronto’s pledge to “remove a range of barriers and support our community members in fulfilling their academic, research and employment goals.”

On the EL Bursaries Cover Sheet, you must specify the EL course(s) in which you are enrolled and provide a brief description of the additional costs associated with the course activities. Such costs may include, but are not limited to: ancillary fees, transportation, equipment, professional attire, and more. Associated costs will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, so please be as specific as possible in your descriptions. Applicants who fail to provide this information may not be considered for an EL Bursary.

Thank you for your interest in the EL Bursaries program.
Please note that applications for S summer courses are due by: July 11, 2021.

Please note that at this time, any applications received for the Fall 2021 session will be reviewed at a later date; see timelines.

Approved applicants will also be asked to complete a pre-course and post-course self-assessment survey as part of their participation in the program.

Eligible Courses

Students must be enrolled in one or more of the following courses to be considered for an EL Bursary. Application approval is dependent upon a student’s commitment to participate in the EL activities offered in eligible courses.

Please be advised that normally scheduled EL activities in courses may be impacted by the evolving COVID-19 situation. Should an eligible EL course or its activities be cancelled during the application period, any approved applicants will be notified and bursaries for these courses will not be paid out.
