Now in its second year, the PILL program was co-created by UTM alum Derek Choi (Class of 2022) and UTSC alum Abira Jeyakumar (Class of 2020) — both Life Science graduates whose own journeys navigating career options beyond the lab and classroom helped shape the program.
This year, the team welcomes UTSC alum (Class of 2015) and UTM alum (Class of 2018) Shaq Sivanathan, who joins to cover clinical research — a career path he wasn't aware of when he was exploring next steps after his undergraduate degree.
Through a combination of course based and team projects, students will:
- Learn how to read clinical protocols and build investigator meeting presentations.
- Understand the pharmaceutical landscape
- Explore new career options after graduation
What are the benefits of the program?
The PILL program offers 3rd and 4th year Life Sciences students a unique opportunity to:
- Gain real world experience in the pharmaceutical industry with a focus on market access, clinical research and health systems planning.
- Develop in-demand skills such as value communication, pricing and economic analysis, and strategy development.
- Build a competitive foundation for careers in the pharmaceutical industry, consulting, and health policy .
- Gain exposure on how scientific innovation translated into patient access, bridging the gap between science and business.
- Strengthen your professional network through industry connections and mentorship.

What is Health System Planning?
Health system strategy and planning focuses on designing, improving, and implementing healthcare services, technologies, and models of care to better meet patient and system needs. It involves evaluating new initiatives, balancing clinical, operational, and financial priorities, and developing strategies to improve healthcare delivery through project management, stakeholder engagement, procurement, and change management. Students will explore how hospitals evaluate and implement new therapies, health technologies, services and care models while balancing patient needs, system pressures, clinical priorities, and resource constraints.

- September 17 – Training Day 1 - Welcome and Intro to Market Access
What is market access? Market access is part of the pathway for a drug to get from bench to bedside. The focus of market access consists of the clinical and economic evaluation of the drug, and the subsequent price negotiation for public and private coverage. Market access professionals navigate regulations, prove the value of their treatments, and ensure that patients can receive and afford the necessary treatments.
Kick-off session introducing students to the PILL program, key expectations, and an overview of the Canadian market access landscape. Students will explore the fundamentals of how drugs are reimbursed and made available to patients in Canada.
- September 24 – Training Day 2 – Budget Impact Analysis
An applied workshop on Budget Impact Analysis (BIA) which is a critical tool used to assess the value of the drug and financial implications of adopting a new health technology in public and private payer systems.
- October 1 – Training Day 3 - Case Study Practice
This session introduces students to Mock Case Study with a focus on Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) and the role of economic evaluation in decision-making by HTA bodies.
