In the Field gives UTM students and recent graduates the opportunity to visit organizations and experience different workplaces, industries and career paths firsthand.
Think of it as a field trip for your career.
Through small-group workplace visits, you’ll meet professionals, explore different roles and career pathways, and gain a better understanding of what working in an organization or industry is really like.

What can I expect?
Each In the Field experience is different and is designed in partnership with the host organization. Depending on the visit, you may have the opportunity to:
- Tour a workplace and see different work environments firsthand
- Meet professionals working in a variety of roles and career areas
- Hear about employees’ career journeys and how they entered their fields
- Learn about the skills, experiences and education that can lead to different careers
- Ask questions about day-to-day work, workplace culture and career pathways
- Learn about emerging trends and opportunities within an industry
- Build your professional network and make connections with people working in areas that interest you
Some visits may also include interactive activities, demonstrations, discussions or other opportunities to experience the work of the organization.
Why participate?
It can be difficult to understand a career or industry from a job posting or website alone. In the Field lets you see the workplace for yourself and learn directly from the people who work there.
You do not need to know exactly what career you want before participating. In the Field can help you explore possibilities, discover roles you may not have considered and better understand what you are looking for in your future career.
Whether you are just beginning to explore career options or already have an industry in mind, these visits can help you connect what you are learning at UTM with the world of work.
Who can participate?
In the Field is open to UTM students and recent graduates within two years of graduation.
Visits are offered throughout the academic year with organizations representing different industries and career areas. Space may be limited for individual visits.
How do I participate?
Upcoming In the Field visits and registration details are posted on CLNx.
Before participating in an In the Field visit, you must complete the Career Exploration 101 online module. If you have completed the module within the past two years, you do not need to complete it again.
