Dear all,

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our 169 graduating students and welcome you to the DVS alumni family! I am very proud of your accomplishments this year and hope that the experiences you have had in DVS, and at UTM as a whole, have been positive and meaningful.

The Cinema Studies Institute – with help from Innis College and the Centre for Indigenous Studies – nominated the great filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin for an honorary degree which is being conferred next Monday at the Innis College Convocation.

DVS student Yurun Wang documents Cross-Canada Trek for MS

Yurun Wang – a DVS student and professional videographer – is documenting Jonathan Allenger’s 6000-kilometre journey across Canada. The journey – which begins in Vancouver and ends in St. John’s – is being carried out both to raise $1 Million dollars for Multiple Sclerosis and, as Allenger indicates in the story below, to raise awareness about MS. In addition to bringing Yurun on board, Allenger will also be cycling with UTM professor Michael De Braga who teaches at the Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy.

The Medium – UTM’s independent student newspaper – recently published a feature on DVS Art History faculty member Dr. Evonne Levy. The feature describes Dr. Levy’s career trajectory, which took her from an early exchange to Italy in high school, to a PhD at Princeton University. Since this time, Dr. Levy has worked on a wide range of projects.

UTM Filmmaker-in-residence Pimpaka Towira to Host Screenings and a Workshop

UTM Filmmaker-in-residence Pimpaka Towira to Host Screenings and a Workshop

Pimpaka Towira – the current UTM filmmaker-in-residence – is coming to campus to present some of her work and to lead a workshop! Towira is both a filmmaker and a programmer who has been an important figure in the Thai film scene since the early 1990s. Her films, which have received international acclaim, range from feature length pictures (One Night Husband, The Island Funeral) to experimental and documentary shorts.

Art & Art History Graduating Students’ Exhibition opens March 29

For the first time in three years, an exhibition featuring the art of graduating students will take place in real space—in the Blackwood Gallery. “Everyday Encounters” opens on Wednesday, March 29, with a reception from 5:00–7:00 pm. The exhibition was curated by students in FAH451: Turning Concepts into Curatorial Projects, taught by Dr. Ellyn Walker. Public programming includes “Paint your Everyday Encounters” (April 5, 12–2:00’ PM in the elgallery), and Lunch Time Artist Talks (April 12, 12–2:00 PM, in the Blackwood Gallery). See you there!
