Summary

If eligible, graduate students in Chemistry must apply to all scholarships, awards, bursaries and fellowships. The most important of these are the University of Toronto Fellowship (UTF), the Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST), the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Postgraduate Scholarship.

Please note that all scholarships, awards, fellowships and some bursaries are considered part of the funding package.  Please visit the School of Graduate Studies website to review the Graduate Funding Structures.

Students submit applications to the Chemistry Graduate Office annually for adjudication.

  • UTF and OGSST are "internal" Department competitions. Therefore, the Chemistry Graduate Studies Committee has final decision in offering awards.
  • OGS and NSERC, however, are "external" competitions. Students submit applications to the Department for preliminary adjudication.
    • In the case of OGS, highly ranked applications are forwarded to the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities for final competition.
    • In the case of NSERC, highly ranked applications are forwarded first to the School of Graduate Studies for University-wide competition. The best applications are then forwarded to NSERC in Ottawa for final competition.
  • Two entrance awards are available to incoming graduate students:
    • the Colin Hahnemann Bayley Fellowship in Chemistry
    • the Connaught Scholarship.
For these awards, the Department selects students from the incoming class. Students are not required to submit an application for consideration.
  • The Department may also nominate students for a third entrance award, the Mary H. Beatty Scholarship.
This is a one-year top-up award to provide NSERC students with additional funds above stipend.

With the exception of the Beatty, scholarship and fellowship support count toward stipend.
Award holders are also assigned teaching assistantship and research assistantship to build a package of financial support of at least $26,289 annually. The main benefit to award holders is that the TA obligation is significantly reduced over the year the award is tenable. Also, for NSERC, OGS and OGSST a vigorous top-up program is in place.
