Bio
Hefan graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Statistics and Geographical Information System from the University of Toronto Mississauga. In addition to data management and analysis, Hefan has always been interested in sociology. This passion led her to combine her knowledge from both majors and focus on research projects in social geography, urban planning, resource allocation, public health, and environmental science.
Hefan's internship experience at Tonseg Qing Testing Services CO. from June 2021 to April 2022 sparked her interest in the relationship between mankind and nature. This third-party environmental monitoring company provided Hefan with her very first exposure to the procedures and elements of the industry and prepared her well for following projects and research. Hefan participated in the Research Opportunity Program at the University of Toronto during the summer of 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Tingting Zhu. She worked alongside several talented students on identifying food desert areas within Mississauga based on accessibility to food outlets and socio-economic factors. As a result of this experience, she became more aware of the connection between sustainability and human well-being and was eventually involved in a sustainability assessment project that was co-proposed by the University of Toronto, PanaSea, and Bonomi Desenvolvimento Empresarial. Hefan and two other students conducted the assessment of PanaSea’s sea cucumber business with great passion and accomplishment. The results of their research also established a foundation for estimating PanaSea's carbon footprint throughout its supply, production, and consumption cycles. In order to meet her future goals for continuing to conduct research related to sustainability, Hefan selected to study in MScSM as a result of the inspiration, experience, and knowledge she gained from her involvement in these projects.
In her spare time, Hefan can often be found enjoying travelling, sports and fine arts. Hefan’s other passions include supporting women in disadvantage.
