What is ISP100?
This course teaches writing- and reading-related skills that are necessary for success in the transition to university work. The course uses a "Writing About Writing" approach to help students understand the writing process, with an emphasis on the concepts of discourse communities, genre, rhetoric, argument, and audience. Rather than focusing on discipline-specific writing skills, the course helps students develop transferable writing skills. ISP100H5 is delivered from the perspective that all writers can improve their writing, so that students with diverse writing skills will benefit by taking it.
Note: All students enrolled in ISP100 must pass the mandatory Writing Check-In (WCI).
Who should take ISP100?
Enrolment in ISP100 is restricted to first and second-year students. Students are highly recommended to enroll in their first year.
ISP100 is highly encouraged for all first-year students, but is a required course if you plan on pursuing any of the following programs of study:
- Anthropology (excluding Forensic Science)
- Astronomy
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Earth Science
- Mathematical Sciences
- Physics
- Political Science
- Sociology (including Criminology, Law & Society)
- Statistics
- Visual Studies (including Art History and Cinema Studies)
How do I enroll in ISP100?
First and Second Year UTM students interested in taking ISP100 will be able to enrol in the course through ACORN when course enrolment is available.
All other students must contact the department for special permission enrolment. Please email isup.advisor@utoronto.ca while course enrolment is open with your preferred sections ranked to request special permission. Enrolment closes as of the first class of the semester. You will find important information about how to enroll in courses on the Office of the Registrar website.
If you have previously taken ISP010, and you are experiencing difficulty enrolling in ISP100, please reach out to isup.advisor@utoronto.ca as soon as possible.
Writing Check-In (WCI)
All students are required to complete a mandatory Writing Check-In during the first scheduled class. Students who do not pass the Writing Check-in will be unenrolled from the course and encouraged to take ISP010: Basics of Writing in English prior to entering the course in a subsequent term. Enrolment will close after the first class due to the Writing Check-in.
