Which programs require ISP100?

  • Anthropology (excluding Forensic Science)
  • Astronomy
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Earth Science
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physics
  • Political Science
  • Sociology (including Criminology, Law & Society)
  • Statistics
  • Visual Studies

However, students planning to major in other programs are also welcome to enroll in the course. ISP100 is highly encouraged for all first-year students. We recommend checking the Academic Calendar for more information on program requirements.

Do I receive credit for taking ISP100?

Yes! ISP100 provides 0.5 credits that can count toward the 20.0 credits you need to graduate. Please note that ISP100 can be used to quality for POSt, but it cannot be used to satisfy Distribution Requirements. For more information on distribution requirements, visit the Office of the Registrar.

Are there any prerequisites for ISP100?

No. There are no prerequisites for ISP100.

I am an upper-year student, can I take ISP100?

Enrollment in ISP100 is restricted to first and second-year students, however third year, fourth year, and non-UTM students are able to enroll if space is available by contacting the department. Third year, fourth year, and non-UTM students must contact isup.advisor@utoronto.ca for special permission enrolment.

What is the Writing Check-In?

The Writing Check-In (WCI) is a mandatory written assessment, designed to assess students' writing skills, for student intending to take ISP100. The WCI requires students to write one short essay in response to an academic article. It takes place during the first class of the semester and is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students must receive a passing grade in the WCI in order to remain in ISP100. Those who are unsuccessful in the WCI will be removed from ISP100 and encouraged to take ISP010: Basics of Writing in English. Therefore, is it essential that students enrolled in ISP100 and attend the first class.
