What have you been doing since graduating from UTM?
“Since completing the TDS program, I’ve built a career as a theatre artist, working as an actor, director, playwright, artistic director, and educator. My work has taken me across Canada with companies such as the Shaw Festival (four seasons), the Stratford Festival, Bard on the Beach, and Neptune Theatre, among others.”
Can you share one achievement, project, or milestone you are especially proud of?
“My first play, Meet Chloe, is especially meaningful to me. The play explores the challenges Black students face in the education system and the lack of Black content in Canadian history curricula. It premiered at Carousel Players in 2021, toured virtually to schools across the country until 2024, and has been seen by more than 10,000 students and educators. In recognition of its impact, I was honoured with an Arts Acclaim Citizen’s Award from the City of Brampton in 2024. Playwriting first sparked my interest during a TDS class taught by alumnus and Governor General’s Award–winning playwright David Yee. That class gave me the foundation and confidence to eventually find my voice as a writer.”
How has your experience in Theatre and Drama Studies at UTM influenced your career or life after graduation?
“TDS encouraged me to be curious and to explore beyond performance. I took courses in dramaturgy, theatre management, audience studies, and playwriting, and even designed an independent study on Black Canadian playwrights. At the same time, I completed a minor in English, which broadened my understanding of literature outside the theatre world. Together, these opportunities gave me a well-rounded foundation and showed me the many paths a career in theatre could take.”
Is there a memory, professor, or production from your time in Theatre and Drama Studies that stands out to you?
“Signing the map at the end of third year stands out as one of the most meaningful moments of my time at UTM. This tradition, which follows the completion of the solo show, felt both intimidating and exhilarating. When it was finally my turn, I not only felt proud of my work but also experienced a profound sense of belonging. In that moment, supported by faculty, classmates, and peers, I knew I was on the right path as an artist — a feeling that has stayed with me ever since.”
