Graduated: 2017
Degree: Honours Bachelor of Arts
Program(s): Theatre and Drama Studies
Current activity(ies): Assistant to the Artistic Director, Crow’s Theatre
What have you been doing since graduating from UTM?
“Since graduating, I’ve focused on theatre directing and acting for film and television, while also running a small marketing business for theatre companies. I’ve produced and directed my own plays and worked with organizations including Crow’s Theatre, Tarragon Theatre, the Musical Stage Company, and the Stratford Festival. I’m now stepping into a new full-time role with Crow’s Theatre as Assistant to the Artistic Director.”
How has your experience in Theatre and Drama Studies at UTM influenced your career or life after graduation?
“The program has shaped every part of my artistic practice—though much of that influence came from the academic side of the program at U of T and the productions at Theatre Erindale. While Sheridan’s conservatory-style classes built a foundation for performance, it was my U of T professors in English and Drama who truly expanded my understanding of what theatre can be. Their courses challenged me to think critically, explore beyond the script, and connect creative work to a broader context.
The balance between academic inquiry and conservatory training made the program unique. It developed not just actors, but artists who can contribute to every aspect of theatre-making. The hands-on crew work at Theatre Erindale also gave me practical insight into backstage processes and instilled a lasting respect for all roles within a production. That experience made me confident in producing my own work after graduation and helped me value collaboration across disciplines.
Another gift of the program has been its community. I continue to work closely with fellow TDS graduates—whether from my own cohort or others across the years. Collaborators like Ali Joy Richardson, Lindsey Middleton, Lindsay Wu, and Marissa Orjalo have become mentors, partners, and colleagues. The sense of shared experience and mutual respect among TDS alumni continues to shape my professional world in meaningful ways.”
Is there a memory, professor, or production from your time in Theatre and Drama Studies that stands out to you?
“There are many. Dr. Switzky’s Shaw Festival course gave us an incredible window into the workings of a professional company. Holger Syme’s Shakespeare tutorial taught me to play with text and uncover new meaning. Jacob Gallagher-Ross’s Theatre of the Everyday course encouraged experimentation and redefinition of what theatre can be. Working with guest directors like ted witzel provided a bridge to the professional world, while directing my own work through the UTM Drama Club, the Beck Festival, and the Junior Project gave me confidence in my own artistic voice.”
