STA312H5 • Topics in Statistics

Fall 2026 topic title: A measure theoretic introduction to probability

Instructor: S. Volgushev

Topic description: The course will start with a measure theoretic introduction to core probability concepts (the Borel sigma field, probability measures, random variables, connection between expectation and integration, convergence modes of sequences of random variables) and move on to core ideas that are useful for applications in statistics such as the law of large numbers and the (multivariate) CLT, Lindeberg-Feller, the delta method. There will be a strong emphasis on rigorous mathematical arguments and proofs.  

Prerequisites: STA256H5 and STA260H5 and one of the following:

  1. (MAT137H5 or MAT157H5) and (MAT139H5 or MAT159H5)
  2. MAT102H5 (with a minimum of 60%) and MAT135H5 (with a minimum of 60%) and MAT136H5 (with a minimum of 60%)
  3. MAT337H5

Enrolment Limits: Priority is given to students enrolled in Applied Statistics Specialist or Major programs and Mathematical Sciences - Major: Applied Mathematics program.

Fall 2026 topic title: Applied Statistical Modelling

Instructor: N. Mudalige

Topic description: A topics course in statistical modeling, covering an extension of linear regression methods to a variety of response types. Topics include a review of simple linear regression; multiple linear regression; the exponential family of distributions;  generalized linear models; logistic regression for binary responses; multinomial logistic regression for nominal categorical responses; proportional odds models for ordinal responses; and Poisson regression for count data. Time permitting, decision trees and random forests may also be introduced. The R statistical software environment will be used throughout the course.

Prerequisites: STA302H5 or STA302H1 or STAC67H3
