The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (MCS) provides graduate students with funding to support the cost annual dues for academic memberships in relevant academic societies and groups.

Student Eligibility
The Academic Membership Assistance grant is open to all research stream graduate students (Masters and PhD) who are affiliated at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and are supervised by a MCS faculty member.

To be appropriately identified in ROSI as 'UTM affiliated', students need to complete and submit the Campus Affiliation form.

Grant Purpose
The purpose of this grant is to defray the cost of membership fees up to a maximum of $100 annually.

Adjudication
Academic Membership Assistance grant requests are subject to Chair's approval. Academic Membership Assistance grant requests will be awarded to all eligible applications if the allotted funding for the granting year has not been exhausted.

Expense Eligibility & Reimbursement

Membership costs will be disbursed through the expense reimbursement process.

Please submit your completed expense reimbursement claim form and the supporting documents (i.e., original receipt/proof of payment) to the Financial Officer, Alice Yang (aliceq.yang@utoronto.ca), for processing.

The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (MCS) provides graduate students funding to pursue and expand their skill set and to explore research and/or professional topics that are not emphasized through training in the lab, field, or classroom.

Student Eligibility
The fund is open to all research stream graduate students (Masters and PhD) who are affiliated at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and are supervised by an MCS faculty member.
To be appropriately identified in ROSI as 'UTM affiliated', students need to complete and submit the Campus Affiliation form.

Grant Purpose & Timing
The MCS Complementary Education Fund (CEF) will provide financial assistance to graduate students who wish to enroll in academic and/or professional development courses that are not covered by tuition. These courses can be taken through online education sites, University of Toronto's School of Continuing Studies, and professional workshops (on and off campus). This fund is to encourage graduate students to pursue additional training during their degree with greater freedom by choosing topics specifically tailored to their academic interests, research needs, and career aspirations.
The granting year runs from May 1st - April 30th and students are eligible for a combined maximum of $500 annually. Any unused balances will be returned to the funding pool at the end of each granting year. All such requests are at the sole discretion of the Chair.

Application Process & Deadlines
The MCS Complementary Education Fund Application Form must be completed and the printout of course/workshop details (which clearly shows the course name, date, time, and the location) attached. The online form must be submitted by the student and the supervisor at http://mcs.utm.utoronto.ca/sysadmin. Results of the application will be sent via e-mail to the student.
All applications must be submitted at least 2 weeks in advance of the intended course/workshop date.

Adjudication
MCS Complementary Education Fund requests are subject to Chair's approval. Fund requests will be awarded to all eligible applications if the allotted funding for the granting year has not been exhausted. If the total sum of grant requests exceeds the allowable funding, priority will be given to applicants who are close to the end of their degrees.

The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (MCS) provides affiliated graduate students funding towards purchasing a personal computer.

Student Eligibility
The computer grant is open to all PhD students who are affiliated at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and supervised by a MCS faculty member.

To be appropriately identified in ROSI as 'UTM affiliated', students need to complete and submit the Campus Affiliation form.

Grant Purpose
The grant provides PhD students funding towards purchasing a personal computer to assist with their research initiatives and academics. The Computer Grant is a one-time request for a maximum of $2,000.


Application Process & Deadlines
Interested students must complete the MCS Graduate Computer Grant form which must be signed by both the student and the supervisor before being submitted to Jessica Bailey (jessica.bailey@utoronto.ca). The application will be verified for eligibility, and confirm if the student can proceed to purchase.

Grant requests will be accepted after 6 months into the PhD program and up to approximately 1 year prior to graduation.

Adjudication
Computer grant requests will be awarded to all eligible applicants providing the allotted funding for the granting year has not been exhausted. If the total sum of grant requests exceeds the allowable funding, approval of remaining requests will be subject to Chair approval.

Expense Eligibility & Reimbursement
Students must submit an expense reimbursement claim for the computer purchase. The template created for the sole purpose of computer expense claim reimbursement is available here. Complete and sign the claim form and submit it, along with the original receipt and signed copy of the application form, to the Finance Officer, Alice Yang at (aliceq.yang@utoronto.ca).

The purpose of this grant is to defray the cost of publication fees (up to $1,000) for papers that require open access for graduate students and their supervisors. This support is made available one time only for graduate students for their first published paper.

Note: The graduate student must be the first author for the published paper.

Open access grant requests are subject to Chair's approval. Open access grant requests will be awarded to all eligible applications if the allotted funding for the granting year has not been exhausted.

Expense Eligibility & Reimbursement
The funds (up to $1,000) will be transferred to the PI account where the open access fees were initially charged.

Alternatively, the support can be disbursed through the expense reimbursement process if the fee was paid out of pocket through a personal credit card.

With research becoming increasingly international, interdisciplinary, and collaborative, the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (MCS) provides funding to support research visits of MSc and PhD students to other Canadian or International institutions.

Student Eligibility
The research visit grant is open to all research stream graduate students (Masters and PhD) who are affiliated at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and are supervised by an MCS faculty member.

To be appropriately identified in ROSI as 'UTM affiliated', students need to complete and submit the Campus Affiliation form.

Grant Purpose & Timing
Students will benefit from the opportunity for short research visits to other institutions, particularly to the laboratories of close collaborators of U of T faculty. Cost of travel and a monthly stipend for up to 3 months are provided to fund successful students to travel to research institutions within Canada or internationally.
Applicants can plan their visit for a few weeks to more than 3 months; however, those who wish to visit for longer than 3 months need to indicate this in the application form and get approval from their research supervisor.

The granting year for this program runs from May 1st - April 30th and students may be awarded up to a maximum of $6,000.

Note: applicants whose visits last longer than the amount funded are responsible for any amount exceeding the $6,000 maximum.

Application Process & Deadlines

Interested applicants must submit (using the online form here) the following items to the Jessica Bailey (jessica.bailey@utoronto.ca). Deadline to apply is April 1st.

  1. MCS Graduate Research Visit Program application
  2. A proposal outlining:
    • what work you will do or skills you will acquire during your visit
    • why you cannot do this work or acquire these skills at UTM
    • how the work will fit into your research program, and
    • what you will be able to contribute to the MCS community upon your return
  3. Proposed budget outlining travel and living expenses (e.g., accommodation, per diem)
  4. Support letter from the host
  5. Support letter from your research supervisor
  6. CV

Adjudication
All completed applications will be reviewed by the adjudicating committee, and the best 5 applicants will be awarded the grant for this program. If the total sum of grant requests exceeds the allowable funding, priority will be given to:

  1. Applicants who have not received this funding in previous years;
  2. Applicants who have a clear justification for their proposal in terms of the work they will do, why it cannot be completed at UTM, how it will fit into and enhance their research program, and how their work will benefit MCS.

Student Eligibility
The travel grant is open to all research stream graduate students (Masters and PhD) who are affiliated at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and are supervised by an MCS faculty member.

To be appropriately identified in ROSI as 'UTM affiliated', students need to complete and submit the Campus Affiliation form.

Grant Purpose & Timing
Travel grants are provided to fund graduate student travel to attend and present at conferences, summer/winter schools and workshops. Other research travel purposes, such as off-site data collection or collaboration, are not eligible purposes.

The granting year runs from September 1st - August 31st and students may be awarded more than one travel grant up to a combined maximum of $2,500 annually. Any unused balances will be returned to the funding pool at the end of each granting year. In special circumstances, when the timing of the event(s) is close to August 31st, students may request a carry forward. All such requests are at the sole discretion of the Chair.

Note: Given the current circumstances due to COVID, we are allowing graduate students to use the MCS Travel Grant to fund alternative research opportunities and professional development activities. Grant requests must align with your current degree program and studies. As per the existing process, your grant request submission requires your supervisor’s review and approval before it is submitted for the internal approval process.

Once approved, expenses can be claimed using the expense reimbursement form found at the bottom of this page.

Application Process & Deadlines
The MCS Travel Grant Application Form  must be completed with appropriate details. The conference/workshop MUST be relevant to your current degree program as well as bring value to your research studies. Results of the application will be sent via e-mail to the student. All applications must be submitted at least 1 month in advance of the intended travel. Travel must be completed within six (6) months of the submission or the funds will be returned to the pool.

MCS Travel Grants have no matching fund requirement. If the total sum of grant requests exceeds the allowable funding, priority will be given to:

  1. Applicants who have not received MCS travel grants in previous years;
  2. Applicants who are close to the end of their degrees;
  3. Applicants who have obtained external travel support (UTM, SGS, conference organizer, etc.)

The MCS Research Opportunity Grant (ROG) will allow graduate students to pursue independent research in their field of interest. Ideally graduate students will work collaboratively on projects, with other students within the department, in other departments at UofT and UTM or with external graduate students at other institutions involved in the same area of research. All research projects must be approved by the graduate student’s supervisor.
Students are expected to submit a short paper and present their findings to a group of their peers at the conclusion of their research.
The granting year runs from May 1st - April 30th and students may be awarded up to a maximum of $2,500 per grant. Any unused balances will be returned to the funding pool at the end of each granting year. All such requests are at the sole discretion of the Chair.
