The Course: SPA211 Intermediate Spanish
This course is designed to strengthen students’ ability to communicate effectively in Spanish while deepening their understanding of Spanish culture and society. Students will develop confidence speaking with native speakers, improve comprehension in real-life situations, and expand their ability to express complex ideas in Spanish.
Through interactive coursework and discussions, students will review advanced grammatical structures and practice written and oral communication. Cultural topics will include Spanish history, art, daily life, and contemporary social issues.
Students will also have the opportunity to travel to Madrid, Spain during Fall Reading Week, where they will engage directly with Spanish culture through museums, neighborhoods, markets, and local cuisine.

The Trip: SPAIN Fall reading week
Approximate Travel Dates: October 24 - November 1, 2026. (Plus or minus two days before and after - exact dates and times will be communicated to you at the pre-departure session).
Spend an immersive week exploring Madrid and surrounding historic cities while practicing Spanish in real cultural settings alongside your classmates and Professor Pablo Robles Garcia.
Through guided tours, museum visits, neighborhood explorations, and shared meals, students will experience Spanish language and culture firsthand while developing confidence using Spanish in everyday situations.

Students will explore the vibrant capital city of Madrid, a cultural hub known for its historic plazas, world-class museums, and lively food culture.
Visit iconic landmarks such as Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace, while learning about Spain’s history and political traditions. Explore famous museums including the Museo del Prado and Museo Reina Sofía, home to masterpieces by artists such as Velázquez, Goya, and Picasso.
Beyond the museums, students will experience Madrid’s neighborhoods, parks, and markets-discovering Spanish daily life through walking tours, cultural activities, and culinary experiences like tapas tastings, churros with chocolate, and traditional paella dinners.
The program also includes day excursions to historic cities such as Toledo and Segovia, where students will explore medieval streets, cathedrals, and cultural heritage sites that reflect Spain’s diverse historical influences.
Payments
Estimated cost of International Component 2026-2027: CAD $4200-4500. (Final Installments will be determined based on the final trip cost).
What is Included: Flights, transportation, accommodation, meals, in-country activities associated with the course, and trip-cancellation insurance. Funding Available!
What is NOT Included: Course fees, fees associated with supplemental travel insurance, additional optional tours/activities while abroad, visa applications, medical exams, vaccinations, on-the-ground medical expenses, and any other additional costs.
Funding
Bursaries will be awarded based on demonstrated financial need (not linked to OSAP) as shown in your funding request in your UTM Abroad application. Read more about funding here!
If you have applied for a bursary, you will hear back about your bursary application at the same time as your trip application. Once you hear back, you will have about one week to decide whether to participate in the trip based on the bursary awarded. Please review the bursary policies here, and cancellation policies here.
