On U of T Giving Day, March 26, Shashi Kant wants his UTM family to rethink the meaning of “sustainability.”

“Generally, people understand sustainability to be about environment and climate change, but it’s so much more than that.” As the founder and former director of UTM’s Master of Science in Sustainability Management program, Kant teaches his students that “we are all connected, we all have the same source of energy and we have to treat each other with respect, understanding and love.”

He points to UTM’s own student body as a place where we can support our community.

“We have students who are really struggling to make ends meet,” Kant says. “In the drive for global sustainability, no one should be left behind due to a lack of financial resources.”

It’s why Kant established UTM’s Equity and Diversity Award and why he has agreed to serve as an ambassador for UofT’s third annual Giving Day focused on helping to make a UTM education more accessible.

Between now and Giving Day, March 26, UTM faculty, librarians, staff and alumni are invited to join together in celebrating and supporting one of three UTM Giving Day priorities: the Equity and Diversity Award, the UTM Indigenous Centre or UTM Abroad. See sidebar for details on how your gift will make a difference.

Every dollar donated between now and midnight EDT on March 26 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $1,000, while matching funds last.

“I was motivated to do this by our students,” says Kant. “From students and alumni to faculty and staff, we’re all in this together.”

The UTM Equity and Diversity Award has supported three Master of Science in Sustainability Management students since 2022, providing them with the resources to ease financial barriers, improve their mental health and well-being and realize their passion for a better world.

Donations to the UTM Indigenous Centre will help expand its services, programming and support for students, faculty, librarians and staff on topics ranging from anti-Indigenous racism and allyship to health and wellness through an Indigenous lens.

Support for UTM Abroad will help increase the number of bursaries available to UTM students who want to study abroad. More than half of the students who participate in the program each year can only do so with financial assistance.
