Independent Research

Independent Research courses allow eligible students to pursue a specific topic of interest in depth at the 300- and 400-level.

Students work independently with a professor in the Department of Sociology who functions as a research supervisor. There are no formal class meetings or lectures beyond what is agreed to with the supervisor.

You can review faculty profiles to identify a faculty supervisor whose research area corresponds to your topic and contact them directly about your research plans.

Please note professors have discretion whether to accept students wishing to pursue an independent studies course; they are not required to serve as faculty supervisors.

To enrol, you must prepare a proposal form in consultation with your supervisor and submit the signed form to the Sociology Academic Counsellor; you cannot enroll via ACORN.
