Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I'm in first year, I thought I was already in Forensic Science! How do I get into the FSC Specialist, Major or Minor?

A. You're in Forensic Science, but that doesn't mean you're enrolled in a Degree program. Like most university programs, you come in undeclared in your first year- everyone declares their Degree at the end of first year.  This is to ensure that this is really what you want to do, without wasting any more time or money on the wrong vocation.

Since a lot rides on forensic scientists being smart, capable and proficient in their discipline, we require an additional form submission on our website, to make sure you're serious and can academically handle what you're about to go through. This typically opens around March 1 and usually closes around May 1st.

So, in addition to declaring your Program of Study (POSt) on ACORN, you ALSO have to submit the form on our site.

Q. I’m planning to switch degree streams and now there are new course requirements for the one I want. Do I have to take them if I change my program?

It depends. Since the program completion requirements depend on the session year that you become active, the answer would be "no" if you become active before the September of your next year. If you change your degree after September then "yes", you would need to include the new course among the courses you take to complete your program requirements. Discuss your needs with the academic advisor. when you request a change, and always check degree explorer.

Q. Do I really need to take Physics 136/137 to get into my applied POSt? Like... REALLY have to??

Oh gosh. So you're not doing too well in Physics, huh?

Well, if you're in the FSC Major, FSC Chem, or FSC Bio, then yes, you need to complete PHY136H5 before being eligible for POSt.

Those same students will need PHY137H5 to graduate, but not to get into second year.

You can always refer to our Program Requirements Checklist to see what you need to advance to second year.

If you apply without PHY137, you can still be approved/accepted into the second year, but if you're in the Major, Chem or Bio Specialist, you WILL still need to take the required PHY courses at some point in order to graduate.

Q. Will I automatically be put into the FSC239Y5 Introduction to Forensic Science course for first years?
Or do I need to manually enroll in the course on ACORN? It's not listed as a 1st year course to add in the UTM student timetable creator.

You must manually add/enroll in the course on your ACORN account yourself. Although the course number starts with '2 'and most 1st year courses start with '1', this is the FSC Introductory course required for entry into all FSC Programs.

Q. I'm in Forensic Science, but I'm blocked from getting into am FSC course! :( Why?

Did you check the enrolment controls in the timetable? A lot of our courses have priority seating for specific students, depending on what FSC degree you're in. Click "Show Explanation" under the Enrolment Controls
in the Course Timetable to see what's preventing you from automatic enrolment. If you are CERTAIN that you're in the correct program, and your courses read "interim", this means you have to be approved for entry by the academic advisor. You can book an appointment with the advisor here.

Q. I want to take a course but I do not have the pre-requisite. Can I contact the instructor or petition to take the course without the prerequisite?

No.

Please do not email your instructor or the Director. The department sets the prerequisite requirements based on careful, long-term consideration of the background essential for the course. Letting in students without this background affects the teaching and learning environment for all members of the course.

Q. Should I be enrolling into FSC100H5 The Real CSI & FSC102H5 The Real Law and Order in my first year?

Although FSC100H5 The Real CSI & FSC102H5 The Real Law and Order are 1st year courses, they are not FSC Program required introductory courses.  They're intended for non-science students with a general interest in forensics. All newly admitted FSC year 1 students should enroll into FSC239Y5 Introduction to Forensic Science.

Q. I was enrolled in FSC100H5 and then I suddenly received an email saying that I had been removed from the course. Why was I removed from the course?

The reason you were removed is because you are also currently enrolled in FSC239Y5 or have taken FSC239Y5 previously, which excludes you from taking FSC100H5.

Q. I was enrolled in FSC101H5 and then I suddenly received an email saying that I had been removed from the course. Why was I removed from the course?

The reason you were removed is because you are not currently enrolled in FSC100H5 F; or you have NOT taken FSC100H5 previously; or you are not currently enrolled in FSC239Y5 or you have NOT taken FSC239Y5 previously, which are the allowable prerequisite courses required to take FSC101H5.

Q. I tried to re-enroll into FSC100H5/FSC101H5 to pick-up the necessary prerequisite but I was blocked from enrolling into it. Why?

Once you have been refused from a course, there is only one way to re-enroll back into the course. You must email the Undergraduate Advisor at: forensic.advisor@utoronto.ca to request re-enrolment back into the course you were removed from.

Q. I want to enroll in a course (e.g. FSC489 and ANT306)  but it says that I need departmental approval. How do I get that?

For these courses, be sure to click on “details” from the timetable to see the course title, description and pre-requisite requirements. Enroll in the course as you would all other courses through ACORN. If you are enrolled in the course and meet all requirements, you are successfully enrolled. Typically for ANT439, you will need approval from the program director pending the approval of your research supervisor. You may book an appointment with the forensic advisor. to discuss your options.

Q. What courses do I need to take to graduate?

You can find your course requirements list on our Course Calendar page. Select the year you were accepted (typically the summer after a successful POSt application), and then select your degree program.  You can also login and check your Degree Explorer to see what courses you might still need to take and what you've completed so far.
