MCS Faculty and Student Present Novel Programming Language: Varphi at WCCCE 2025

Assistant Professor Mohammad Mahmoud and MCS student Hassan El-Sheikha recently attended the Western Canada Conference on Computing Education (WCCCE) in Calgary, where Hassan El-Sheikha presented Varphi, a new programming language designed to describe, simulate, and debug Turing machines. This innovative tool is especially valuable for courses like CSC363, offering a more intuitive way to engage with foundational computing concepts.

Congratulations to Andrijana (Andie) Burazin, who is this year’s recipient of the Margaret Sinclair Memorial Award. 

“It is very humbling to receive this award, because when you look at past recipients, I can’t even shine a light to it. Margaret Sinclair was a powerhouse of mathematics education; her work was very impressive and she made many contributions to the MathEd Forum,” she says.

The MCS department is pleased to share that Assistant Professor Gururaj Saileshwar has been recognized with a Top Picks Award in Hardware and Embedded Security for the paper “MIRAGE: Mitigating Conflict-Based Cache Attacks with a Practical Fully-Associative Design” with co-author Professor Moinuddin Qureshi of Georgia Tech.
