UTM to hold vigil in memory of Flight 752 victims

Members of the UTM community will gather on Thursday to remember those who died last week in the crash of Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752.

A prayer and memorial service for the victims of the crash, including UTM fourth-year science student Zeynab Asadi Lari and her brother Mohammad Asadi Lari, will be held on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5 p.m. in the atrium of Maanjiwe nendamowinan.

All students, staff, faculty and community members are invited to attend the service, which is being held by U of T Mississauga, the UTM Students’ Union and STEM Fellowship.

Eight members of the U of T community were among those whose names were on the plane’s passenger manifest:

Zeynab Asadi Lari, founder and president of the UTM branch of STEM Fellowship, is remembered as an accomplished young leader, mentor and friend. Her brother, Mohammad, who is described as deeply compassionate, was a co-founder and former managing director with the organization.

“Their passing is an unimaginable loss for their family, friends and communities they were part of,” says Sasha Noukhovitch, founder of STEM Fellowship.

It is estimated that 50 people – students, staff, and faculty members – from 19 universities and four colleges across Canada died in the Jan. 8 crash that killed all 176 passengers.
