Hollywood director discusses ways to bridge gap between cultures, races, genders at public lecture
Hollywood director Mira Nair, whose debut film Salaam Bombay! was nominated for an Oscar, will discuss the craft of filmmaking as well as the tug of competing worlds felt by millions of immigrants, at a free public lecture Thursday, Sept. 19, 6:30 p.m. in the Instructional Centre, room 110, U of T Mississauga, 3359 Mississauga Rd.
Nair, who was raised in India, schooled at Harvard and now lives in New York City, uses her natural grasp of identity conflict to make films that explore race, gender, inter-generational strife, cultural appropriation and displacement. From Salaam Bombay!, which won 25 international awards including two at Cannes, to Amelia (a biopic of Amelia Earhart), Nair has established herself as one of the most formidable directors working today. Her latest film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, is a striking commentary on identity, immigration and terrorism.
Nair’s other films include Mississippi Masala (with Denzel Washington), Vanity Fair (with Reese Witherspoon), The Namesake (with Kal Penn) and Monsoon Wedding.
